Best Bets of the Day – Friday, November 23rd 2018

st etienne

Lyon v St Etienne

Ligue 1
BT Sport 3 – 7.45 pm

Lyon have quietly strung together another good season in Ligue 1. They get an early jump on the weekend with a Friday night kick off in the French top flight as they welcome St Etienne to the Parc OL. This should be some clash as well as Lyon’s opponents are right there, one place and one point behind them. Lyon’s incentive, is that a win could see them put a nice bit of distance between themselves and whoever is in fifth place at the end of the weekend. The home win can be backed around the 6/10 odds mark at leading bookmakers. Les Gones are carrying W4 D2 L1 form at home this season and the other fascinating aspect of this game is that it will be their first home test against any of the other current top five.

St Etienne are running on a four-match unbeaten streak of form at the moment in the French top flight, winning their last two. They would keep things wide open in the top five if they collected a win in this one. Even a point would turn out to be a decent return as they have gone D1 L2 in their three away games against the current top three this season. Les Verts may turn up and try and keep things tight and frustrate points out of Les Gones. St Etienne are winless in their last four visits to Lyon, but their current form suggests that they could make a decent fist of this latest trip to the Parc OL in what should be an intriguing clash.

Worcester v Harlequins

Gallagher Premiership Rugby
BT Sport 1 – 7.45 pm

The Premiership swings back into action on Friday night with Worcester aiming to pull themselves away from the bottom of the table a bit. The Warriors actually have the best points difference of all sides 6th or lower heading into the weekend. So it will be interesting to see if their offence can take a chunk out of the Quins. Worcester have actually scored two tries more than their Friday night opponents have managed this season. So even though the results haven’t worked out for them (W2 L5) they cause opponents plenty of problems. The home side are 8/11 general odds at top bookmakers to win this scrap.

Each of the last four meetings between the two clubs in the Premiership has produced a home win. But what makes this Friday night clash fascinating and why it’s a big focus of our Best Bets of the Day is that Worcester are trailing Harlequins in the league. The Quins are up in the top five and no-one in this season’s campaign have managed to pick up more bonus losing points than they have done. So even when they have suffered their setbacks, they have still produced impressive form, firing off the tries and producing defensive strengths. The Quins are 5/4 underdogs they are certainly not a side who lay down and roll over easily.

Ipswich v West Brom

Championship
Sky Sports – 7.45 pm

The Tractor Boys are having a season to forget in the Championship as they are rooted to the foot of the table. They will be hoping for a bit of cheer at Portman Road on Friday night as they look to earn points to help claw themselves out of trouble. They are five points away from safety ahead of this kickoff and have some big work to do. While they are floundering having won once this season only, there has been a reason for a little more optimism after back to back draws. But they have remained winless at home with a D6 L2 record at Portman Road this term, netting only six goals.

The Baggies, who are the top scorers in the Championship by a country mile, have bigger ambitions at the other end of the table. A win on Friday will move them back up into second place. The recent international break came just at the wrong time as West Brom had recorded a thumping 4-1 win over fellow promotion-chasers Leeds on November 10th. Can Darren Moore’s men pick up where they left off and go and bag themselves three points? It’s a chance for them to kick up the pressure on those above them in the table. You will find West Brom around 10/11 odds at leading bookmakers to get the win on the board.

BIG BETS BOBBY’S TAKE ON DECEMBER 2018’s BIGGEST FIGHTS!

Brook Zerafa Dec 8 2018

It’s the calm before the storm in the boxing world at the moment. After a quiet fortnight, December promises to deliver weekly drama with Wilder-Fury, Brook-Zerafa, Fielding-Canelo, and Whyte-Chisora/Warrington-Frampton on back-to-back weekends!

This weekend, however, the attention turns to Monaco and New Jersey as we focus on a selection of intriguing matchups on either side of the Atlantic.

First up, Matchroom Boxing returns to Monaco on Saturday night with a fractured card of some miss-matches and one competitive bout – Frank Buglioni vs Fanlong Meng. After getting blitzed out inside a round by domestic rival Callum Johnson, “Wise Guy” Buglioni is looking to reinvigorate his career at light-heavyweight in a tough assignment against unbeaten Chinese fighter Fanlong Meng; the IBF inter-continental light-heavyweight strap will be on the line at the Casino de Monte Carlo on Saturday night.

A 2012 Olympian with a solid unbeaten record, Meng will arrive in Monaco having been on the road for his last two fights. “Cold Blood” has notched up wins over Emmanuel Danso and (an underwhelming) Brad Austin having travelled to Macau and the US in recent outings, with a clear push to get the 175lbs fighter’s name out there to widen his profile. A convincing win on Sky Sports this weekend will do wonders for the Chinese fighter’s career – the hunger will be there, making him a very dangerous prospect for the seasoned Buglioni.

The problem for Buglioni lies in the odds for this fight. A ‘home’ fighter for Matchroom tends to be offered three types of fights: an easy tick-over, a top of the bill domestic 50/50 or a title shot; despite being for an inter-continental title, at 8/15 Buglioni is in a high-risk, little-reward fight. Without the typical home support that “Wise Guy” would receive in an O2 or Wembley Arena fight, the placid surroundings of the Monte Carlo Casino will be low on adrenaline, with the southpaw of Meng likely to give the North Londoner a tricky night’s work.

Buglioni is still the rightful favourite, but the unknown quantity of this Chinese southpaw is a huge concern. Meng is used to travelling; used to an amateur style of out-pointing an opponent – his price of 8/5 to win the fight is too good to turn down. Buglioni – despite bouncing back in a win over Emmanuel Feuzeu in July – will still be scarred by his first round KO by Johnson. It’s down to Meng to avoid his right hand throughout the 12 rounds, outworking him to a points victory using his controlling jab.

Fanlong Meng to beat Frank Buglioni @ 8/5 (BetFred)

Atlantic City, New Jersey is the location for, arguably, the biggest fight of the weekend. Canadian veteran Jean Pascal rises to the challenge once again as he attempts to claim the WBA light-heavyweight title away from the feared Russian Dmitry Bivol.

Bivol has notched up a record of 14-0 since turning pro in 2014, and with impressive wins over Chilemba, Barrera and Valera on his record, Bivol is on the cusp of the pound-for-pound top ten.

Pascal is a credit to the sport. Refusing to turn down the biggest of tests, the 35-year-old has mixed it with the best. Despite falling short against the likes of Sergey Kovalev (twice), Eleider Alvarez, Bernard Hopkins and Carl Froch, the light-heavyweight has racked up two back-to-back wins in his latest push towards world honours. Despite his bravery, this latest test against Bivol isn’t likely to last long. The Kyrgyzstan-born Russian has monster power in the 175lbs division which is beautifully masked by his slender frame; Pascal is well past his best, but his heart will convince him he has a chance this Saturday night.

Bivol is too classy and is a couple of fights away from a super-fight unification. He’ll be looking for a showreel KO.

Dmitry Bivol to win by KO @ 2/9 (BetFred)

Big Betting Sporting Events: The Australian Open

Dsd2MyvVsAAr7XF

The Australian Open is the first major tennis event of the calendar year and is always a tremendous spectacle. It is one of my favourite sporting events of the year and is also a very big betting event for many people, including myself.

Where and When?

The Australian Open is held in Melbourne at the City’s Tennis Complex and the Rod Laver Arena, which stages the final of the event can hold up to 15,000 spectators.

It is held during the final two weeks of January and is one of the only major sporting events to take place at this time of year.

Why is the Australian Open so Popular?

Aside from the Australian Open being the first Grand Slam of the year, it is also popular because of its position in the sporting calendar. Tennis players take a break between mid-November and the beginning of January and tennis enthusiasts like myself are often left bereft of action during this two month period. The Australian Open signals the beginning of a new season and whets the appetite for ten months of tour level action.

I also see it as an opportunity to see which players have kept themselves in shape during the festive period and it can also provide a chance for aficionados to analyse which players will breakthrough during the course of the season.

A large portion of the season’s match-ups are played on the hard courts and there are always plenty form-lines to analyse for bettors. That is also part of the reason for its popularity with punters.

What Betting Opportunities are Available?

The short answer is: Plenty!

It’s the first Grand Slam of the season and one of the most popular betting events on the tennis calendar. I always enjoy a pre-tournament ante-post bet on the Australian Open but there are also daily opportunities to wager on players to win their matches or cover the handicap. Daily accumulators are also very popular with 20-30 matches taking place per day during the early rounds of the competition.

Popular Betting Markets

Ante-Post – Tournament outright betting is very popular ahead of the Australian Open. This market is available with every single one of the top UK bookmakers and they will often be priced up months in advance. Players such as Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer are always placed towards the top of the betting and the pair are once again the favourites for the 2019 staging of the Grand Slam.

I often look further down the market and tend to pick out players who have previously competed well at the tournament or those who have been making decent progress over the last 12 months. Unlike the US Open, this tournament doesn’t tend to throw up too many surprises and sticking with the first ten players in the betting is often the best way to approach this market.

Daily Accumulators: I always enjoy placing a daily accumulator on the Australian Open. It’s possible to keep across all of the game although during the first couple of days, many of them are going off at the same time!

The Australian Open always throws up a couple of shocks but generally it goes to form in the first couple of rounds and it’s a good chance to win big for smaller stakes. I also often look towards players who are traditionally slow-starters to the year to be knocked out during the early stages of the competition. There were a number of shocks in 2018 with seeds exiting left, right and centre and this is often down to the fitness edge.

I always look for players who have won or competed in tournaments prior to the Australian. Although it is the first Grand Slam of the year, there are a number of events held in the likes of Hobart and Brisbane which allow players to enjoy some competitive action down under. Not only will this help them to increase their levels of fitness but it will also help them acclimatise to the climate which can often be stifling.

Do not include any players in your accumulators who are yet to play a competitive match!

Correct Score Betting

Tennis tournaments can often throw up a number of short-priced selections and betting on the correct score markets is one of my favourite ways of finding value. I always look for short-priced favourites such as Federer, Djokovic, Nadal, Serena Williams and Wozniacki and aim to back them to win in straight sets.

On the men’s side of the draw, betting on a 3-0 correct score is often a good way of increasing your returns whilst in the women’s game, a 2-0 correct score is less precarious and offers less value but is still a good way of betting during the opening couple of rounds.

In terms of correct score betting for each set, I often like to back reliable operators like Federer to win 6-3 or 6-4 as the Swiss maestro will often only need one break of serve to clinch the set. These are often decent prices and fairly frequently, prices such as 7/2 or 9/2 are available on these score-lines. A little research will help you dig out the players who regularly win sets by the smallest of margins.

Tie-Breaks

Big serving players are common these days and I always find joy in backing the likes of Sam Querrey, Kevin Anderson and John Isner to have sets involving tie-breaks. They are rarely troubled on their own serve but don’t necessarily have the energy to get around the court in order to break the opposition’s serve.

At the Australian Open, this is particular prevalent as the energy-sapping conditions of Melbourne lead to less explosive games and fewer players wanting to expend energy during the early stages. One of my favourite bets is backing the first set to go to a tie-break in games involved these players and you can find this market with all of the best UK bookmakers.

Bobby’s Betting Tips

Whether you’re backing the player to win their match as a single bet or you are considering placing them into a lucky 15 or 31, there are always things to look for ahead of the Australian Open.

  • Record in the Southern Hemisphere/Australia – This is important as the climate down under can often be sweltering and players have been known to feel dizzy or faint during matches at this tournament. Always check how they have previously fared at this tournament/Australian events
  • Tournament Build-Up – Many tennis players will not be back in action until the Australian Open. These players will have practiced but they can often lack match experience. If a player has been working hard at the warm-up tournaments, they are more likely to prevail
  • Slow/Fast Starters – Always consider how a player starts the season. Some competitors regularly take a couple of months to find their stride whilst other start quickly but often tire themselves out by mid-June.
  • Injuries – This isn’t an easy tournament and any player who is carrying an injury should be avoided. Some players will simply come to collect their prize money and hope for an easy first round draw but the conditions do not tend to allow half-fit players to progress

How to watch the Australian Open on TV in the UK

Most online UK bookmakers will stream every single game from the tournament and this is a great way of following your favourite players. These streams are completely free.

The matches generally don’t take place at sociable hours for UK viewers but highlights can be seen on the BBC each evening and Eurosport 1 and 2 will offer full coverage throughout the morning.

Betting on the Australia Open

If you’re thinking of having a wager on the Australian Open ahead of January, make sure you take advantage of the many betting bonuses currently available including Acca Insurance, which is handy for daily parlays on the tournament!

BOBBY’S BEST WEEKEND BETTING EVENTS – 24th-25th NOVEMBER

Soccer – Premier League – West Ham vs Manchester City

As much as I like International football, I’m always pleased to see domestic soccer return and the first of my big betting events this weekend comes from the Premier League. West Ham have been much improved in recent weeks and I’m intrigued to see how long they can hold out for against Manchester City. This game is made more interesting due to Manuel Pellegrini coming up against his former employers and there is a lot of respect between the two managers. The Hammers are unbeaten in three coming into this game and they have become much tougher to beat but this is their toughest test of the season.

However, Manchester City are on another level and they have a great record against West Ham in recent years. From a betting perspective, Manchester City will be popular and they are likely to score goals at this ground. They won 4-1 at the London Stadium last season and they have previous won 4-0 and 5-1 against the beleaguered Hammers and a similar result is not out of the question once again. I love watching City go forward and they should be able to put on a good show in East London.

Sergio Aguero and David Silva have been purring recently and I’m expecting both of them to start this game. I can’t wait to see how many goals the Premier League leaders can rack up here.

Extended highlights of this game can be viewed with Sky’s Match Choice on Saturday evening.

American Football – NFL – New York Giants @ Philadelphia Eagles

With Thanksgiving coming around once again, it’s a bumper crop of NFL fixtures this weekend and I can’t wait to enjoy all of the action this weekend. Two of my favourite teams clash on Sunday night and the Giants visit to Philadelphia is the second of my big betting events this weekend.

I’ve been disappointed with the New York sides this season so far but there is still plenty of time for a late run and the Giants are showing signs of life, finally! They still sit bottom of the NFC East Division but they have won back-to-back games coming into this fixture and they won’t be fazed by this road trip. A victory here will put them back into contention and all of those early-season troubles will be forgotten.

The Eagles have been somewhat disappointing so far and they have not looked like defending Superbowl Champions. Much better is expected from the Eagles and NFL enthusiasts like myself are still expecting a late surge up the conference but this won’t be easy for them against a resurgent opposition.

The Eagles have lost three of the last four games and they were absolutely hammered by the Saints last weekend. They need to recover fast and I can’t wait to see how they respond.

UK viewers can enjoy this game on Sky Sports Action on Sunday evening

Soccer – Premier League –  Spurs vs Chelsea

Chelsea are embarking upon a long unbeaten run and very few sides in English football can boast a similar record at the time of writing. I can’t wait to see how they line-up in this London derby which is quite rightly one of my big betting events this weekend.

Many fans were slightly sceptical about the arrival of Maurizio Sarri but the Italian has had an instant impact and he is yet to taste defeat in the top flight. However, this is a massive challenge for the former Napoli man. His side were defeated on their last trip to Wembley (in the Community Shield) and he will be hoping to put that right here.

The Blues have conceded just eight times this campaign and Harry Kane will have his work cut out here. He was England’s hero on Sunday and although he hasn’t hit the heights of last season, he clearly enjoys playing at the National Stadium and won’t mind a quick return to West London.

Betting on this game should be very interesting and it’s incredibly difficult to call although that makes it a more intriguing prospect in my opinion. There have been 13 goals between this pair in their last three meetings and both sides have come out on top in recent clashes. Spurs conceded early against Manchester City and lost 1-0 against the leaders and they’ll be hoping to keep it tighter for longer here against another top four contender.

Liverpool are the only side to have breached the Chelsea defence in their last five away trips in all competition and although Sarri’s side don’t have to travel far for this clash, they will be hoping for a similar outcome here.

Premier League fans can enjoy this game on BT Sport 1 on Saturday evening. Kick off is at 5:30pm UK time.

American Football – NFL – Seahawks @ the Panthers

After a promising start to the season, the Panthers have struggled in the last couple of weeks and will be desperate to bounce back here. They are set to host the Seahawks on Sunday night in my fourth and final big betting event of the weekend.

The Seahawks still have their eyes on a play-off spot and although it’s been a mixed campaign with a 5-5 record, a win here will keep their chances alive and the fans are hoping that their side can remain competitive this season. A mistake by Don Rivera in the closing stages of the Panther’s clash with Detroit Lions meant it was back-to-back defeats and they must bounce back from that disappointment here.

It’s an intriguing clash and I can’t wait to see how the Panthers respond to that unexpected setback. It’ll also be interesting to see if the Seahawks can make the most of their time off and with the Seattle side not playing last weekend, they should be much fresher than their hosts for this clash.

If the Seahawks can inflict a third consecutive defeat on their opponents, they will go above them in the standings and that is a huge incentive for the hosts.

Sky Sports in the home of NFL in the UK and viewers can enjoy this game on their various channels.

How to wager on Live Betting intelligently:

Bet with the Head and not the Heart
Sporting events evoke emotions for everyone – especially if a team or player one follows/supports is involved in the contest.. Punters must always maintain perspective and if things aren’t going well in the dying embers of a match – shouldn’t chase the win too much and should move on to the next sporting contest to place a bet on.

Be Flexible
Whilst pre-match odds are often very rigid, live betting odds often drift regularly – giving punters the chance to bet on a team or player in most scenarios available. Being flexible with the betting approach and accepting that odds may drift and come in as the fixture pans out is an important consideration when Live Betting.

Watch the Game
Live Betting presents the opportunity for punters to actually watch the action as it unfolds and bet on it instantly. Whilst Pinnacle offer statistical analysis for their live betting fixtures, punters should always look to become immersed in the action as they can spot patterns in play or tactical approaches that will inform their decision to bet on one outcome or another.
