Best Bets of the Day – Friday January 18th 2019

norwichcityfc

Norwich v Birmingham
Championship – 7.45 pm
Sky Sports

I start off my best bets of the day preview for Friday with a cracker. The Canaries appear to have lost their way a little bit in the Championship title race. They have failed to get a win on the board in any of their last four played, drawing their last two. They did get a good point though last weekend in a draw away at fourth-placed West Brom, but the Canaries will be desperate to get back to winning ways.

Already this winless streak has seen them lose a grip on second place to Sheffield United. Three points at home against Birmingham on Friday night would see the Canaries move back to within one point of leaders Leeds. It would restore a good bit of confidence as well, no doubt. But it may not be the easiest of games as Birmingham are knocking on the door of the playoff spots.

The Blues have the fifth-best defensive record in the Championship this season so aren’t going to get knocked over easily. They are also unbeaten in their last four away games and leading bookmakers have them at 19/20 to avoid defeat at Carrow Road in a Double Chance bet option. When the two met earlier in the season there was a 2-2 draw at St Andrews. But the Canaries were on a three-match winning streak (all to nil as well) against the Blues before that. This should be a fascinating tussle.

Barry Hawkins v Neil Robertson
Masters Snooker – 7.00 pm
BBC

The action at the Masters winds its way towards the semi-finals with Barry Hawkins and Neil Robertson in the final quarterfinal match up on Friday. Australia’s Neil Robertson clawed his way back from an early deficit against second-seed Mark Williams to book his palace in the quarterfinals, taking a 6-3 win over the Welshman. Robertson, the 2012 Masters champion, has exited at the quarter-final stage in the last two seasons but he is the 8/11 favourite with the leading bookmakers to reach the final four from this match.

Barry Hawkins eased his way past former Champion Shaun Murphy his opening match, only giving up the two frames. Hawkins trails Robertson 9-11 in the head to head from previous matches. But it was the Englishman who came out on top in their last meeting, taking a 10-6 win at the China Open. This first-ever meeting between them at the Masters looks as if it may close to going the distance. Definitely one to tune in to.

Newcastle v Toulon
Champions Cup Rugby – 7.45 pm
BT Sport

It is the last round of action in the pool stage of the European Champions Cup and sadly for both of these, this now becomes a dead rubber. Newcastle had to produce something special last weekend against Montpellier in order to keep themselves in contention for a place in the next round. It didn’t quite happen for the Falcons though who ended up getting smashed 45-8 by the French outfit.

It’s more French opposition for them this weekend as they face Toulon at Kingston Park. I’m hoping that without pressure on the game, it could be a good relaxed and open affair. Newcastle start two points above bottom side Toulon so this is a fight to avoid the wooden spoon in the pool. The Falcons edged a tight scrap against Toulon right back on matchday one, taking a 26-25 win away from home. Joel Hodgson played a huge part for the Falcons, making five kicks from five. The top bookies have Toulon turning up at defending a +7 handicap at 11/8 odds.

Hoffenheim v Bayern Munich
Bundesliga – 7.30pm

I couldn’t pass up a look at this clash from the Bundesliga. The top flight action in Germany returns after their winter break. That could boost the hopes of Hoffenheim avoiding defeat in this one, as they could be catching Bayern Munich in a cold start. It’s not that so much though, it’s the fact that Hoffenheim have won their last two league home games against Bayern Munich which adds that extra spice to this one. Hoffenheim are also running on huge ten match undefeated streak of league form.

Granted they have drawn each of their last six league fixtures, so while the winning touch may not be there, they are certainly resilient. Also, they have taken home draws this season against two of the other current top three sides of Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Moenchengladbach (Bayern are second). But then you have Bayern who boast the best away record in the Bundesliga and they are starting at the 4/7 favourites with bookmakers. Bayern have won their last three away games and have averaged over two goals per road game this season. Will they be able to unlock their hosts at the Rhein-Neckar Arena?

Big Betting Sporting Events: Formula 1 – The British Grand Prix

DwUR6rOX4AAiqGk

Formula One is extremely popular worldwide and has dedicated followers in several different countries. The season begins at the end of March and typically starts in the Southern Hemisphere.

Races are typically staged every couple of weeks with countries such as Belgium, Monaco, Austria, Hungary, Singapore and Mexico all staged races during the course of the season.

One of the most popular races on the calendar is the British Grand Prix which is held at Silverstone in Northamptonshire. It is an event which typically takes place mid-July and it attracts visitors from all across Europe. The championship standings have typically begun to take shape by this point and there is always plenty at stake in this race.

The race has been held in Britain since 1950 and 2019 will be the 52nd time that Silverstone has hosted this magnificent sporting event. Britain is one of just two countries to have host a GP every year since the Championship begun (alongside Italy)

Attending the British GP is understandably high on many sports fan’s bucket lists and tickets often change hands for eye-watering prices.

The British Grand Prix Trophy is handed to the winner and this contest has been dominated by home-favourite Lewis Hamilton in recent years. He has won here five times and is level with Alain Prost and Jim Clark. Drivers must undertake 52 laps of the track and the course is considered to be one of the simpler tracks on the circuit.

When and Where

Although the date of the British GP is subject to change, it typically takes place in Mid-July at the height of British Summertime. It takes place at Silverstone Race Track although it has previously been staged at Aintree, Brands Hatch and Brooklands. Silverstone has hosted the event every year since 1987.

There have been murmurings about the possibility of moving the race to London in the future.

Why is the British GP so Popular?

Formula One fans are extremely dedicated to the sport and remain enthusiastic about every single one of the races on the calendar however the British GP is seen as one of the standout races each year.

It is held at a crucial part of the season and important points can be obtained at Silverstone.

There have also been a number of memorable contests staged at the track over the years and the race often evokes memories of these. From a betting perspective, there are always plenty of opportunities to spot trends and use statistics at this particular race.

What Betting Opportunities are Available?

There are several betting opportunities available ahead of the British GP and markets are typically priced up following the previous contest.

Punters can take advantage of several different markets (further details below) and it is generally advised to explore the various options available.

Bookmakers will also add markets for the first practice and qualifying events and these are always popular with Formula 1 fanatics. Once these are complete, further markets will be added for the race itself.

Popular Betting Markets

Outright Winner (Race Winner)

This is the simplest of the markets and it is a case of predicting the winning driver. Generally, the favourites are priced up at prohibitive odds but there have been races in which the betting market is fairly open. Your chosen driver will be required to finish in front in order to receive a pay-out.

Top Six Finish

Each bookmaker will offer a different number of places on each race but the majority of betting firms will offer a top six finish in the race. This is ideal for drivers who routinely drive well in the contest and it is a safer way of playing. Your driver will need to finish in the top six in order to receive a pay-out and retirements will also help in this regard.

Top Ten Finish

As above but with a little more leeway. Drivers will need to finish in the top ten and this is a good way of betting on outsiders. Some constructors typically put in solid performances at Silverstone and these are the ones to watch.

Driver Match Bet

A fun market in which you don’t need to predict the winner of the race. These are not available with every bookmaker but the majority will have a smattering of them available. For example, it could be 5/6 for Driver A to finish ahead of Driver B. In order to receive a pay-out, you would only need Driver A to finish in front of Driver B and it doesn’t matter if they finish 15th and 16th respectively.

Pole Position

A market which is available pre-qualifying and is a case of predicting which driver will begin the race at the front of the grid.

Fastest Lap

This is a market which will not be decided until the race has finished. Some drivers have quicker cars than their rivals and even if they finish 14th, they realistically could still clock up the fastest lap of the race.

Winning Constructor

This is a market which requires bettors to predict which team will win the race. Some constructors will have two prominent drivers in the running and they are often the shorter priced options in this market. It’s a good way of hedging your bets and you don’t even have to predict the winning driver.

To Not Finish the Race

Many drivers will crash out of the contest or endure engine failure at some point during the race. Some of them have the habit of doing this on a regular basis and it is always advised to back these drivers in this market. It’s not a particularly positive market but it can be very profitable.

Bobby’s Big Betting Tips for British Grand Prix

  • Driver History – Similar to horse racing, some competitors just drive well at particular tracks. Drivers who have been on the F1 circuit for many years will have their history available online and it’s always best to back drivers who enjoy driving at these particular venues. Alternatively, some drivers routinely fail to finish the race at Silverstone and there are markets available to back against them making it across the finishing line.
  • Home Favourites – Lewis Hamilton has a great record in the race and as well as just being a terrific driver, he is also helped by the raucous home crowd. British drivers are always hugely popular and they should always be favourably priced in the market.
  • Always Check the Weather Forecast – The weather can be interchangeable and it’s always best to check the forecast ahead of the British GP. Some constructors don’t cope well with heavy rain whilst windy conditions can also have a huge say in the outcome. It isn’t as much of a problem at Silverstone but it’s always best to anticipate the conditions and you may gain an edge on the bookmakers by being smart.
  • Track Idiosyncrasies – Some cars such as Sauber are particularly good at preserving their tyres whilst others are not so economic in this respect. Savvy F1 bettors should take a look at the corners of the Silverstone circuit and work out how this will affect each team’s tactics. You can roughly anticipate a constructor’s system by studying their performance in previous contests. Luckily, there are many races prior to the British GP which should provide clues.

Where Can I Watch the British GP in the UK?

If you aren’t lucky enough to be attending the race at Silverstone, UK sports fans can watch all of the action from Silverstone on Channel 4 and on Sky Sports Formula 1 each season.

The AFC Champions League 2018 Prediction Report

DmK9XA6UcAEooz7

The AFC Champions League is an elite competition which is staged each season and is contested by a number of top class teams from across Asia. 32 teams enter at the preliminary stage of the tournament and the competition is eventually whittled down to just two. The eventual winner will progress to the FIFA Club World Cup as a result of their success.

Some teams will gain automatic qualification for the tournament if they finish top of their respective league whilst many others will be required to go through the play-off system.

Older football fans are likely to remember the competition as the Asian Club Championship. It changed its name in 2002 and has remained in place ever since. Clubs from the J-League and K-League tend to dominate the competition and have been extremely successful over the years although Al-Ain were the first winners in the newly formatted AFC Champions League. The Japanese and Korean top flights get four entries each which has been integral to their recent success in the competition.

It typically runs between March and November although this has altered slightly over the years. The games are played in a two-legged format from the quarter-final stage onwards. Away goals do count in these fixtures. Surprisingly, the final is also held as a two-legged tie which is unusual. The knock-out stage typically begins around August.

2018 Prediction Report

The rise of the Chinese Super League has seen a number of clubs from the division priced up favourably in the betting markets. In June, Shanghai SIPG were the favourites in the betting and they were given a 23.08% implied probability of success. Their chances were certainly helped by their talented squad which includes Oscar and Hulk, two players who have had success in the UEFA Champions League and could make the difference. They were drawn against Kashima Antlers in the knock-out rounds which was a tough fixture for the CSL winners.

Another Chinese Super League side – Guangzhou Evergrande weren’t far behind in the betting markets and they were given 18.18% implied probability just ahead of Al Ahli who were rated as a 12.50% chance.

Jeonbuk Motors are one of the most successful sides in the competition and dominated the K-League in recent years. They were expected to go well and were given an implied probability of 12.50% as well. Al Ain who were victorious in the first ever re-branded AFC Champions League were next in the betting at 7.69%. They are the same price as the impressive Kashima Antlers.

2018 Result

After seeing off fellow K-League outfit Jeonbuk Motors, the Suwon Bluewings progressed to the semi-final stage of the competition but were eliminated at the hands of the Kashima Antlers. It resulted in two fantastic goal-heavy ties with an aggregate score of 6-5. The Antlers were joined by Iranian side Persepolis, who against the odds, saw off Al Sadd.

In the final, Kashima Antlers, who started as odds-on favourites played out a goalless draw in Iran before winning 2-0 on their own patch and securing the AFC Champions League title. It was their first-ever AFC Champions League title and the eight-time J-League winners celebrated effusively.

Along the way, the Antlers eliminated the early favourites Shanghai SIPG in the first knock-out round.

Big Bets Bobby’s Take On The Manny Pacquiao VS Adrien Broner

Manny.Pacquiao.VS .Adrien.Broner 1

This weekend’s action is centred around the return of one of the true greats of boxing. Manny Pacquiao – an eight division world champion – returns to the ring against the brash, loud, unpredictable and often unsavoury, Adrien Broner.

In this, his 70th fight inside the professional ring, Pacman will look to defy Father Time once again as he steps into the ring to defend his WBA (regular) strap at welterweight; Broner has mixed it with high-level opposition but has often been found wanting at the highest level.

Broner is eleven years the junior of Pacquiao, and although The Problem has already lost to the likes of Marcos Maidana, Shawn Porter and Mikey Garcia, there is belief in the Broner camp that he can inflict the last defeat on the career of the great Filipino.

Since his controversial loss in Brisbane to the un-fancied Jeff Horn, Pacman bounced back with a stoppage win over the game Lucas Matthysse in a fight that saw him record his first stoppage victory since 2009 – a TKO win over the legendary Miguel Cotto. Matthysse is, and was, a faded force, however, knowing he still has the power to stop an opponent is of great importance for Pacquiao as he comes into his latest fight.

With talks surrounding a rematch with Floyd Mayweather this summer, a win is crucial for the Filipino if he is to keep that fight as relevant as it could be; a loss is expected to see Pacman hang up his gloves – if it is emphatic enough.

Broner has experienced as much trouble with the law as he has inside the ring during his career. His record stands at 33-3-1, with that draw coming in his last outing against Jessie Vargas. His last win came in February 2017; the only notable win on his C.V is arguably Paulie Malignaggi in 2013 – or even Carlos Molina at super lightweight.

Pacquiao’s speed of thought, speed of footwork and hands will cause The Problem problems. Broner has proved he has a good chin, but his willingness to engage could prove his downfall in a fight that looks made for Pacman. Broner’s youth is an advantage not to be slept on in this fight. The American is sure to have pockets of success in the fight against the ageing champion, but is still likely to be outworked.

Footwork will be crucial in this fight; it’s unlikely AB will be able to cope with the constant in and outs of the Filipino. Broner isn’t as light on his feet and may be made to look silly later on in the fight when he begins to get frustrated.

Broner’s chin rules out the KO in my opinion, however, it should be a fairly comfortable night on the scorecards for Pacman.

Manny Pacquiao to win by decision or technical decision @ 11/10 (BetVictor)

BOBBY’S BEST WEEKEND BETTING EVENTS – 19TH – 20TH JANUARY

Dw4E7STX4AAD X1

Soccer – Premier League – Huddersfield vs Man City

The first of my big betting events this weekend comes from West Yorkshire and is an intriguing fixture in the Premier League. David Wagner was left Huddersfield on Monday night but his departure arguably went under the radar as Manchester City were easily sweeping aside Wolves at the same time. The German proved to be an excellent appointment for the club and managed to guide the Terriers into the top flight and keep them there. He’s struggled this season and although this game would have been seen as a free-hit for the gaffer, he opted to walk away with his dignity in tact.

Manchester City will see this as a great chance to increase their goal difference and put more pressure on Liverpool at the top of the table. Former defender Mark Hudson will take temporary charge of the club for this game and he will be eager to avoid a mauling.

Pep Guardiola’s side were efficient against Wolves but were helped by Willy Boly’s dismissal. The champions are odds-on here but it’s a decent betting proposition as there are lots of different markets to get involved with. The Citizens are often backed on the handicaps and that could be the way to go with this one. Bettors must consider whether Huddersfield are going to sit deep and try to nick something on the break or play with the shackles off.

Whichever tactical approach Huddersfield decide upon, Manchester City are likely to have too much quality and I can’t wait to get involved with the goalscoring market once I’ve had the line-ups confirmed.

Huddersfield look set to return to the Championship but fans will be hoping that they put up a fight from this point onwards. They lack quality in the final third and Manchester City will be hoping to add another clean sheet to their collection.

This is a fascinating match-up for a Sunday afternoon and I can’t wait to explore the different markets available.

American Football – NFL Play Offs – Saints vs Rams

The NFL play-offs continue and we have just one match-up this weekend as the Saints take on the Rams. Unsurprisingly, this crucial contest is the second of my big betting events this weekend.

This NFC Championship is a fascinating head-to-head and the Saints are heavily favoured for success. Under Sean Paynton, they have an excellent record in the play-offs, particularly at home, where they are 6-0. They are expected to continue that imperious run at the Mercedes Benz Superdrome.

It wasn’t plain sailing against the Eagles, who gave them a stern text in the division round. They ended with a 20-14 victory and Paynton can be pleased with his sides ability to dig in and get through a tricky tie.

However, the difficulty has been cranked up yet again here with the in-form Rams hoping to continue their superb run of form. They weren’t expected to be so comfortable against the Cowboys last weekend and although their 30-22 scoreline suggests that it was relatively close, they always looked the better side. They clocked up 273 rushing yards against the Dallas side who had previously nulified the majority of their opponents.

This is going to be a stellar game and although the Saints are heavily favoured, I expect it to be close. Sean McVay is one of the brightest coaching talents in the NFL and I would expect him to come here with a plan. He’ll be looking to stop the New Orleans side in their tracks and it’ll be a fascinating watch.

This might be a game for punters to bet in-play and wagering once the game has got underway is definitely something I’ll be doing on Sunday night.

You can follow all NFL Play-Offs games on Sky Sports Action this winter

Cricket – Big Bash – Syndey Thunder vs Brisbane Heat

I love a relaxing early Sunday morning where I can enjoy all of the Big Bash action and there’s a cracking tie this week in Sydney. The Thunder take on Brisbane Heat and it’s the third of my big betting events this weekend.

Both Sydney sides are going well in this year’s Big Bash and the top of the table looks fairly open at the moment. With a net run rate of 0.304, the Thunder are narrowly edging out the Sixers and they’ll be keen to keep pressure on early leaders – Hobart Hurricanes.

Brisbane Heat were defeated by five wickets on their last visit to Sydney and they will be keen to avoid a second successive defeat in this part of the world.

The Sixers are still one of the favourites for success despite a couple of inconsistencies. Last season, this is the kind of game they would have relished and they would have won easily but this year, it’s not quite as straightforward. They defeated the Adelaide Strikers in their last outing with Shane Watson impressing. He smashed 68 off 40 balls and I caught the end of his vintage performance and he looked full of confidence. It helped them cement their place in the top four and they’ll be looking to him for inspiration once again.

Brisbane Heat arrive full of confidence after a resounding win in Geelong. Their 101-run win against the Melbourne Renegades was a warning shot to the rest of the division and their recent performances make Sunday’s match-up even more intriguing. This fixture should be full of quality and is likely to be played at a frantic pace. I cannot wait to have a bet on this game and I’ll be hoping for a typically high-scoring affair.

Cricket fans in the UK can enjoy this game on BT Sport 1 on Sunday morning

Football – Premier League – Newcastle vs Cardiff

With so many Premier League teams decamped at the bottom of the table, every single week seems to throw up a relegation battle and this game at St. James’ Park is my final big betting event of the week as there is so much at stake!

Newcastle have plodded along this season but they could be dragged into a relegation battle here. They equipped themselves well against Chelsea but they are generally better away from home. Rafa Benitez’s side struggle when they have to take control of a game and play on the front foot and that’s what they’ll be expected to do here.

Cardiff have found away games tough in the top flight but this is arguably one of their best opportunities to claim three points and Neil Warnock will be fully aware of the situation. The wily boss knows his side must win games against sides around them and he was disappointed that they couldn’t beat Hudderfield.

With Newcastle’s poor home form and Cardiff’s less-than-adequate away form, this match isn’t going to be a high quality affair but thats part of the reason why it is a fascinating betting heat. The markets will favour the Geordies heavily in this one but punters like myself have got to work out if they can be trusted to win on Tyneside. They’ve won just two of eleven games here in front of their own fans and they are far from a guarantee.

Johnson the Favourite as the Open returns to Pebble Beach

2019 US Open

The 2019 US Open will see a return to one of the iconic courses of US golf as the prestigious event will be hosted by Pebble Beach. It will be the sixth time that the venue has staged the US Open in the last 50 years, and the seventh Major to be held at the course in its history.

There is also a significant shuffling of the Major calendar in 2019, with the PGA Championship being moved to May, making the US Open the third, rather than the second of the season’s Majors.

The course itself has not changed much since it was last used to host a Major in 2010, and it offers a distinctive challenge through a combination of small greens and narrow fairways, along with the buffeting winds that sweep in across the Pacific, and the firm, fast conditions.

At this early stage, the implied probabilities on the bigbetbookmakers.com site indicate that Dustin Johnson is the favourite for US Open glory. The 2016 winner has been astonishingly consistent in this competition in recent years, finishing inside the top five four times in the last five years. He also has unfinished business at Pebble Beach. At the 2010 US Open, he led the field by three shots going into the final round but endured a nightmare 82 to finish eighth.

Another leading contender at Pebble Beach this summer will be the two-time reigning champion Brooks Koepka, who completed a remarkable triumph in 2018, winning his second consecutive US Open – the first player to achieve that feat since Curtis Strange in 1989 – despite missing four months of the season as he recovered from a wrist injury. And his top-ten finish at Pebble Beach in the 2016 Pro-Am suggests that he will have no difficulty coping with the course.

At the other end of the career scale, there are two veterans who will add to the appeal of the US Open this year. The US Open is the one Major that Phil Mickelson has yet to win. The oldest winner of the US Open was Hale Irwin, who won it in 1990 when he was 45, so at the age of 49, Mickelson would have to defy history, but as one of the greatest players of the modern era, there are few better placed to do that, and there’s no doubt he would be a popular US Open winner in 2019.

Then there’s Tiger. Just when you thought the sun was finally setting on his career, he produced a string of stunning performances in 2018. His late charges through the field at the Open and the PGA Championship were followed by a famous win at the Tour Championship, and there will be plenty of golf fans betting on Woods to win his fifteenth Major at Pebble Beach in June, an incredible eleven years after his last Major success, at the 2008 US Open.

Msdossary Crowned FIFA E-World Cup Champion

Msdossary

The road to the e-World Cup finals started with a qualifying competition that included a staggering 20 million hopefuls bidding for e-sport glory. But only 32 made it to the Grand Final in August, and only one could lift the new FIFA eWorld Cup Trophy.

That honour fell to Mosaad ‘Msdossary’ Aldossary, who claimed the world title after a comprehensive 4-0 aggregate victory over Stefano ‘StefanoPinna’ Pinna at the O2 in London. The final was watched by an arena full of e-sports fans as well as a global audience. The event has grown so popular that the organisers laid on international live streams in four different languages.

Aldossary qualified for the e-World Cup thanks to his victory in April’s FUT Champions Cup, staged in Manchester, and going into the tournament, he was rated as third favourite for victory according to the implied probabilities shown on the bigbetbookmakers.com site.

After two days of action, he was one of four contenders still standing but he faced a tough Xbox semi-final against Kurt ‘kurt0411’ Fenech. Fenech had been impressive in overcoming Michael ‘Megabit’ Bittner in the quarter-finals, but Aldossary produced an equally eye-catching performance in knocking out the reigning champion, Spencer ‘FaZe Gorilla’ Ealing. Ealing had won the title in 2017 with a 7-3 win over Kai ‘Deto’ Wollin, but he proved to be no match for Aldossary in the last eight this year, and the Saudi star carried that strong form into his semi-final, scoring an 8-3 aggregate win over Fenech.

In the PlayStation semi-final, Danish hopeful Marcus ‘Marcuzo’ Jorgensen was in confident mood after recording a huge shock in the last eight, beating tournament top seed Nicolas ‘nicolas99fc’ Villalba. And he made a strong start to the semi-final, taking a 2-1 first leg lead over Pinna. But the Belgian dug deep and showed plenty of character to win 4-3 after taking the second leg to extra time.

Pinna and Aldossary received a rapturous welcome as they took to the stage for the final, and a chance to claim the $250,000 winner’s prize. But the final itself turned out to be a one-sided affair. Aldossary was in control from the off, winning 2-0 in the PlayStation leg, which gave him a massive advantage heading into the second leg on his preferred Xbox, and the result was never in doubt as he saw off Pinna’s challenge to register another 2-0 win and claim the coveted title.

Speaking after the final, Aldossary said that he was proud to have the chance to represent his country on such a huge stage. He became the second Saudi Arabian player to win the tournament, after Abdulaziz Alshehri triumphed in 2015, when it was known as the FIFA Interactive World Cup (FIWC). And as well as the $250,000 prize, Aldossary also earned an invitation to the FIFA Football Awards in September, attended by some of the most famous football figures in the world, underlining the growing significance of the FIFA e-World Cup and e-sports in general.
