Rams Slight Favourites to Edge Out Patriots

Patriots.Brady V Rams.Goff

After weeks of thrilling action, the 2018-19 NFL season has delivered two outstanding candidates for Super Bowl glory in the Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots, and although the Rams go into the game as slight favourites, it promises to be a tight battle.

Having missed out last year in an epic Super Bowl to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Patriots lost two of their first three games of the 2018-19 season, and there was even talk of the legendary Tom Brady being at the end of his career. But they kept finding ways to win, beating a resurgent Chicago team at Soldier Field and edging out Kansas City in a classic 43-40 thriller at the Gillette Stadium.

But their most impressive performance came in the AFC Championship game, where they took on the Chiefs again, pulling out a remarkable overtime victory, in which Brady served a reminder to the young pretender Patrick Mahomes, that he wasn’t ready yet to surrender his crown. Brady had also put on an exhibition of quarterback play in the Divisional round, when the highly-rated Los Angeles Chargers were picked apart at Gillette Stadium.

Standing in the way of Tom Brady’s sixth Super Bowl ring, and a sixth Super Bowl triumph for the Patriots, are the Los Angeles Rams. Although they were rated as only sixth favourites to win the Super Bowl by the implied probabilities on the bigbetbookmakers.com site, the Rams dominated the NFC West Division, finishing with a 13-3 record. That included a run of eight straight victories to start the season, and a 35-23 win over their rivals the Los Angeles Chargers in Week Three.

The Rams had a tough route to the Super Bowl, facing the in-form Dallas Cowboys in the Divisional Round, and the 13-3 New Orleans Saints in the NFC Conference Final. But that proved no problem for the Rams. Against Dallas they outbattled one of the NFL’s leading defences and neutralised a dangerous offence that included Ezekiel Elliot and Amari Cooper.

Against the Saints, the Rams were on the back foot for most of the game and never led at any stage, despite edging their opponents in terms of yards gained. But with 15 seconds left on the clock, Greg Zuerlein slotted a 48-yard field goal to send the game into overtime, where Zuerlein was again the hero, scoring a 54-yard monster kick – the second longest in NFL play-off history, to send the Rams to the Super Bowl for the seventh time in the franchise’s history.

Elsewhere there were some disappointments in the season, most notably the collapse of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who had a 7-2-1 record but then lost four of their remaining six games to drop out of play-off contention and end a four-year play-off streak. The Jaguars were let down by a declining defence, while Green Bay couldn’t overcome a tough schedule and the Eagles were unable to repeat their 2018 heroics, losing to New Orleans Saints in the Divisional Round.

Super League Rugby XXIV Preview

Rugby League e1548799607697

It may just be one of the country’s best-kept sporting secrets. A jewel that shines in its own right. But one which is dimmed by the popularity of other sports. I’m talking about Super League Rugby.

It’s probably a bit unfortunate for the sport that the timing of the start of the new season puts it alongside the start of the RBS Six Nations over in the rival Union code. That certainly doesn’t help in trying to pull more support.

But this season, the powers-that-be are determined to raise the profile of the sport. To that end, they have shaken up the format of the Super League. There are also new rules to make it a little bit more exciting. Before I delve into the season preview, it’s worth taking a look at the changes. They could make this a defining season for this hidden jewel. After all, this is a sport which has Magic Weekend – what could be better than that?

The Shake Up

It’s a hard-hitting sport. It’s a sport where matches go through spells of high intensity. However, a lot of time wasting at things like the scrum and the dropouts have crept into the game. These are moments which players have exploited to knock seconds off the clock. No longer though, because a version of a ‘shot clock’ has been introduced to make sure the game is kept moving.

Also coming in for this season, and this could be pivotal for in-play betting, is that interchanges have been cut back from 10 to 8 per team per game. So the big hitting forwards, who generally get swapped around during a match to get a breather, won’t get as much opportunity to do so. That means there is more fatigue likely to set in. Which means mistakes. Which means more exciting climaxes, hopefully.

New Route to the Grand Final

There are two parts of a Super League season. There’s the regular season where the team who finishes top is awarded the League Leader Shield. Then a play off system has determined the Grand Final champions. That Super 8 play-off system has been kicked to the touchline. Even relegation was not a straightforward affair, but that’s all changed now.

At the end of the regular season, the top five in the league move through to a new playoff system. It’s a good play off system as well. The fifth-placed team has to work harder than the team who finished first in the standings to reach the Grand Final basically. Making a lot more sense is the new relegation. The bottom side will be dumped to the second tier at the end of the season. The winner of the second tier joins the top flight for the following season. Simple enough.

Super League XXIV Season Preview

Last season was a season of upsets. Leeds Rhinos were the reigning champions but had a stinker. At one point they were on a ten-match losing streak. Needless to say, they didn’t get through to even the Super 8’s. St Helens took the League Leaders Shield last season and were backed for more.

Because of the immense scoring power which they had produced over the course of the season, they were favourites to lift the Grand Final title. It didn’t pan out that way though. The favourites lost in the play offs against Warrington which was a huge upset.

But the Saints are expected to come back strongly, with the top bookmakers having them as 3/1 joint-favourites to win the regular season. They are the same price to lift the Grand Final crown too. The main challengers look to be Warrington, who made something of a surprise run to the final last season.

Warrriors to take extra step?

It was the Warriors who took out St Helens in the playoffs to make the Grand Final. They were stopped heavily in their tracks in that finale though by Wigan. But still, that was a strong campaign from the Warriors who have added key pieces this season to make a stronger assault on the title.

Wigan is one of the most famous and most successful sides in the history of Rugby League. Last season they were second best to old rivals St Helens in both the regular season and after the Super 8’s. But that didn’t matter in the end as they had the last laugh. Wigan picked up the title in the Grand Final. Wigan are 9/2 with leading bookmakers to defend that title, which would be a huge feat in the current climate. The last team to defend a Grand Final title was Leeds back in 2012.

Broncos join the top flight

Coming up to the top flight this season from the second tier are the London Broncos. This is not an easy transition though and it will be interesting to see just how they manage life in the top flight. The Broncos come up, despite only finishing second to the Toronto Wolfpack in the second tier. But it was the Broncos who edged the Canadians away from home in a tense 4-2 play-off victory to earn promotion.

With the new rules in place this season, the top side in the second tier automatically earns promotion. The London Broncos are the 1/4 favourites for relegation from the Super League. Wouldn’t it be something if they were replaced the following season by the Wolfpack, eh?

The Power Trio

Leeds Rhinos 7. Wigan Warriors 4. St Helens 2. That sums up the last thirteen seasons of the Super League in terms of where the title has ended up going. No-one else has had a look in since the Bradford Bulls won the 2005 edition. That’s the kind of thing where proven winning mentality at certain clubs keeps coming through. The elite factor. Even after their horrible season last term Leeds are joint second favourites to lift the Grand Final title this year, bookies having them at 13/2 odds.

The Magic Weekend

Oh yes, I mentioned this right at the start and it would be remiss of me to not divulge a little further. For one special weekend, which this year is in late May at Anfield, all teams play a match at that one venue. The point? Nothing more than a huge spectacle to try and raise the profile of the game and get it some extra attention. It works.

Plenty to look forward to

So this new Super League season starts with the big shakeup in place. Hopefully, all the plans that have been laid out to make the game more dynamic and to shake off some of the sluggishness that has crept into it actually happens. There looks to be some big battles ahead both at the top, the race for a place in the new Top 5 Play-Offs and with straight-up relegation on the line. Bring it on!

Molinari Triumphs in First Major Success at British Open

golf Francesco Molinari

The 147th Open Championship and the eighth to be held at Carnoustie, Scotland, produced a thrilling four days of top class action and a first-time Major winner in Francesco Molinari.

Molinari was not rated among the favourites to win the tournament, and after opening rounds of 70 and 72, he seemed destined to finish in the chasing pack behind US stars Kevin Kisner and Zach Johnson, who set the early pace. In blistering hot dry conditions that enabled some of the bigger hitters to exceed 400 yards with their drives, Kisner opened up with rounds of 66 and 70 while Johnson hit a 67 and 69, leaving them tied for the lead at 6 under going into the weekend.

Rory McIlroy, rated as the fourth favourite to win the tournament according to the implied probabilities on the bigbetbookmakers.com site, was also in touch at that stage after two solid rounds of 69 as he aimed for his fifth Major title and his second Open Championship.

But in the third round, McIlroy’s charge stalled and a score of 70 saw him lose ground on the leaders. Johnson also struggled, making bogeys at the eleventh and twelfth holes that left him four shots behind. Kisner held on to the lead after a round of 68, but ominously for the rest of the field, the reigning champion and pre-tournament favourite Jordan Spieth had started to make his move, with a spectacular six under par 65, including a dramatic birdie at the tenth after finding the rough off the tee.

At the same time as Spieth was hitting form, Molinari had started to discover his touch. He matched the reigning champion with a 65 of his own, which included six birdies and no bogeys, but he still had plenty of ground to make up on the final day, trailing joint leaders Kisner, Spieth and Xander Schauffele by three shots. The third day was also notable for an impressive surge by Tiger Woods, who briefly tied for the lead, eventually finishing four shots back with a 66.

Woods wasn’t able to sustain that form on the final day, though he still recorded his best finish in a Major since 2013, while both Spieth and Kisner received reminders that links golf can be cruel. Spieth had a nightmare final round of 76 that dropped him right out of contention, while Kisner dropped four shots on the front nine, effectively ending his chances. Justin Rose fared better, following up a third round 64 with a solid 69, but Molinari was the undoubted hero of day four.

The Italian, who has been a stalwart of the European Tour for years, made a steady start with a string of pars, holding his nerve and his game together as others struggled. A birdie at the fourteenth took him to seven under, and he completed his victory in style, hitting his approach to the eighteenth close to the hole and finishing eight under for the tournament.

OG Finally Claim DOTA International in Five Game Thriller

OG DOTA

The much-anticipated annual climax to the Dota 2 season produced a thrilling conclusion as European team OG overcame PSG.LGD in a five-game classic final.

With a total prize fund of $25 million, a global audience of 15 million and 20,000 fans packed into the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada, this year’s International was the biggest ever and it provided a fitting conclusion as a makeshift OG team did what two previous iterations had failed to achieve.

Formed in 2015, OG had been highly rated going into both the 2016 and 2017 Internationals before disappointing their fans. In both years they won two Majors before the International, but then failed in the tournament itself. In 2016, they finished in a tie for 16th and in 2017, they were knocked out by LGD: the team they would ultimately face again in the final.

Ahead of the 2018 edition, however, no-one was tipping OG. In fact, they were rated as eighth favourites according to the implied probabilities on the bigbetbookmakers.com site. That lowly rating was due in part to the personnel changes on the team. Roman Fominok left the team in March, and they subsequently lost both Gustav Magnusson and Tal Aizik who defected to Evil Geniuses.

OG came into the tournament with a line-up that featured the returning Anathan Pham, along with the previously semi-retired Sebastien Debs, who had been OG’s coach, and Topias Taavitsainen, a largely unknown player from Finland. But the hastily assembled squad battled hard to finish fourth in Group A, putting them into the Upper Bracket, where they enjoyed the satisfaction of beating their two ex-members when they won 2-1 against Evil Geniuses in the Semi Finals.

The favourites for the tournament, Virtus Pro, made a solid start, finishing second in Group B. But defeats to LGD in the Upper Bracket and Evil Geniuses in the Lower Bracket ended their tournament, while LGD, who had finished above OG in Group A, in turn defeated Evil Geniuses to set up the Grand Final against OG: a best of five battle that turned into a classic.

The 2017 Final had been something of a non-event as Team Liquid easily beat Newbies 3-0, but for the eighth edition of the tournament, LGD and OG served up a contest to match the famous 2013 Grand Final. OG dominated the first game, but then the Chinese team hit back hard. They won games two and three comfortably and appeared to be on their way to victory in game four, inspired by captain Xu Linsen, dominating play for the first 45 minutes. But then a remarkable comeback from OG saw them turn the game around to level the Finals at 2-2.

LGD were again on top in the final game, and for 20 minutes, OG were struggling, but once more the Europeans found a way to turn things around and recorded one of the most epic comebacks in eSports history, winning the tournament for the first time.

BOBBY’S BEST WEEKEND BETTING EVENTS – 2ND-3RD FEBRUARY

DyBujPYXQAEFh7h

American Football – Super Bowl LIII – The Patriots vs The Rams

The Super Bowl has come around extremely quickly once again and it’s hard to believe that we have reached the end of the NFL season. Just the final two have been left standing with the Patriots taking on the Rams for the ultimate prize in football. I couldn’t leave this one out of my big betting events this weekend.

Both of these sides will fancy their chances of getting their hands on the Lombardi Trophy with the Patriots bringing bags of experience to the occasion. Their 37-31 victory over the Chiefs was a thriller and they deserve their place in the Super Bowl despite looking average for large chunks of the campaign.

Bill Belichick is searching for an unprecedented sixth title of his era and there’s every chance that they can grind out another professional performance on this big stage. Tom Brady’s influence may not be as powerful but he’s still got bags of experience and possesses the guile, nous and know-how to potentially get his side over the line here. He’s also enjoyed success in this game on five occasions and the three-time MVP winner will be confident of adding another to his impressive tally.

The Rams also required overtime in order to book their place at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium with Sean McVay’s side sneaking past the Saints, securing a late 26-23 victory. McVay has turned the franchise around he’s had quite the impact since taking over three years ago. They represent a new-wave of sides who are aiming to dethrone the established sides and they could upset the Patriots here with their energy.

The Rams arrive as slight underdogs and that makes them a very interesting prospect in this game. Theyn aren’t being underestimated with the bookmakers keeping them on-side and that is likely to result in an evenly-contested game.

For the first time in many years, I don’t have a confident selection on the Super Bowl and that makes it a very intriguing game from a betting perspective. It’s going to be a cracking watch and I can’t wait for the action to begin.

NFL fans in the UK can enjoy all of the action on BBC1 this weekend.

Soccer – EFL Championship – Leeds vs Norwich

It’s a fantastic weekend of sport and it was rich pickings when it came to my big betting events but I couldn’t ignore this top-of-the-table clash in the Championship. These are two teams who have featured on TV several times already this season so I’ve seen plenty of them and I’ve been suitably impressed by both Leeds and Norwich.

Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival in England has provided a tremendous narrative and he’s currently defying his critics who suggested that his sides always fall away post-Christmas. His Leeds sides have been a joy to watch despite a number of injuries and they’ll be keen to build upon their success last weekend.

Daniel Farke’s side have been playing some tremendous football this season and Norwich are one of the most aesthetically-pleasing sides in the second tier. They have some wonderful young players in the squad and Teemu Pukki has been nothing short of a revelation.

This match has caught my eye due to the potential implications on the title race this season. It’s also a fascinating betting event with the Canaries having only lost once away all season despite also having just six victories to their name on the road.

A draw will keep equilibrium at the top of the table but I can’t imagine either manager settling for such an outcome and that makes it a fascinating match-up and a brilliant meeting of minds.

There is also the potential for in-play betting opportunities in this game and I would also look towards the goalscorer markets with a number of hugely talented players on show for both sides.

There is plenty of sport to enjoy this weekend but this fascinating tussle between two high-flyers is certainly one to keep an eye on.

UK viewers can enjoy all of the action from Elland Road on Sky Sports Main Event on Saturday night.

Rugby Union – Six Nations – Ireland vs England

I can’t believe it’s Six Nations time again! It’s has come around remarkably quickly and with the Rugby World Cup on the horizon, I’ll be closer attention to the tournament than ever before. The most intriguing clash from the opening set of fixtures has to be defending champions Ireland taking on England at the Aviva Stadium and it’s the first of my big betting events this weekend.

Joe Schmidt’s side were foot-perfect throughout 2018 and their victory over the All-Blacks during the Autumn Internationals has seen them become odds-on favourites for the 2019 Six Nations.

Sides rarely win back-to-back tournaments and although I can’t put anyone off backing Ireland once again, they are faced with a difficult start against a fired-up England side.

Eddie Jones’ men were a mixed bag last season and were hugely disappointing for the the majority of the campaign but they are extremely capable and the sense of occasion may just inspire them for this one. Yes, they have a few absentees but they possess a strong squad and they will be up for the fight.

Ireland’s accurate kicking game is likely to be a thorn in England’s side throughout the match-up and Schmidt’s side are likely to try and take the sting out of the occasion.

It is a fascinating betting event because Ireland have been priced up as heavy favourites but I believe that England will make a game of it and I think they can keep things tight. Ireland are well-coached and resilient and they will tough to break down and although this might not be the most free-flowing game of the weekend, it’s set to be a fascinating tactical battle.

I can’t wait for the Six Nations to get underway and there are likely to be plenty of twists and turns along the way. It’s going to be a fascinating one to bet on.

The BBC will have fill coverage of the Six Nations throughout the weekend and this game will be screened live on BBC1.

Soccer – Bundesliga – Bayer Leverkusen vs Bayern Munich

The Bundesliga has been fascinating so far this season and holder Bayern have got work to do as they bid to reclaim their crown this campaign. Their trip to a much-improve Leverkusen side is the fourth of my big betting events this weekend.

Since the beginning of December, Bayern have been faultless and have won seven games in a row. Any doubts over the suitability of Niko Kovac have long since dissipated and the fans appear happy with their progress. Unfortunately, due to their slow start, they are still trailing Borussia Dortmund by six points and they must find a way of bridging the gap.

They’ve had some relatively straightforward games in recent weeks but this weekend’s trip to Leverkusen is likely to be a tricky assignment. Peter Bosz has had quite the impact since arriving at the club and he is gradually steering them in the right direction. They’ve won four of the last six games and have started scoring goals again. Their 3-0 hammering of Wolfsburg at the weekend was further evidence of their capabilities in the final third.

Bayern have won seven of the last eight meetings with Leverkusen although they dropped points here back in April 2017 and they cannot afford any complacency here.

Leverkusen have some extremely dangerous players including Kevin Volland and Kai Havertz who could find plenty of joy against Bayern’s backline.

The betting markets suggest that Bayern should make it eight on the bounce but i think there could potentially be value in backing Leverkusen to keep things tight and I can’t wait to see how this 2:30pm kick-off plays out. If Bayern can bridge that gap at the top, it will make the final few months extremely intriguing indeed.

This game can be streamed via the websites of numerous online bookmakers. Radio commentary is also available through Amazon.

Big Betting Sporting Events: The Six Nations

Dx8ir1qWsAAYZU4

The Six Nations is a International Rugby Union competition which is held in Europe on an annual basis. The tournament has evolved over the years but it began in 1883 with just four sides taking part in the event. The Six Nations Championship is one of the most wagered events on the sporting calendar and is always jam-packed full of drama and excitement.

The six teams who take part are England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France and Italy. There are a total of 15 matches taking place throughout the competition with each of the six sides facing one another during the tournament. Home advantage will alternate each year so England will host Ireland at Twickenham one year before re-opposing at the Aviva Stadium twelve months later.

The tournament typically takes place at the beginning of February and matches will be played across a number of weekends until mid-March. Teams are awarded four points for a win, two for a draw and losers will be awarded a point if they lose by seven points or fewer. This bonus-points system was only introduced at the beginning of 2017 to mirror other International rugby events.

Teams who finish bottom of the standings after their five matches will be awarded the wooden spoon whilst there are a number of separate battles which take place including the Calcutta Cup, which is contested between England and Scotland. Any home nation which wins each of its matches against the home nations will clinch the “Grand Slam”. Ireland achieved this feat in 2018.

When and Where

The staging of the Six Nations typically takes place at the beginning of February and the games will be staged across the weekends although it often takes a week-long break in late-February. One game is usually staged on Friday night with the remainder of the matches taking place on Saturday and Sunday.

Each nation will host at least two games during the Six Nations with the likes of Twickenham, Murrayfield and the Principality Stadium all hosting games throughout the tournament. Twickenham and Stade de France have the largest capacities with over 80,000 spectactors regularly attending these crunch games.

Why is Six Nations so Popular?

The Six Nations is the most attended sporting event on the planet with thousands of rugby fans descending on the various stadiums around Europe. The small amount of games is a huge part of the appeal with a number of unmissable encounters taking place in such a short period of time.

The game remains hugely popular and with the majority of teams taking a break following the Autumn Internationals, fans are always keen to see how their side are shaping up ahead of the summer.

The tournament has a lot of history and it is typically played at the same time each year which makes booking ahead relatively simple. Fixtures are also announced months in advance which also helps fill out the grounds.

From a punting point of view, the tournament always throws up a few surprises and therefore it is always an exciting betting prospect.

What Betting Opportunities Are Available?

Ahead of the tournament, ante-post betting markets are priced up and these are always popular. Rarely do teams managed to secure back-to-back championships and many clues can also be garnered from the Autumn Internationals which can often shape the market.

Each match will be priced up days in advance with plenty of betting markets available on each game. There are numerous ways of getting involved pre-match and plenty more betting opportunities once the game gets underway.

Popular Betting Markets

Outright – This is extremely popular with pre-tournament bettors. The tournament often swaps hands but it is usually only contested between three or four sides and the betting will reflect this. Your chosen side must triumph in order to receive a pay-out.

To Win the Triple Crown – As previously explained, each of the home nations will have the opportunity to clinch the triple crown. The market includes an option for ‘No Winner’ and this is usually favoured during this competitive-looking tournament.

To Finish Bottom – This is a market which has become increasingly popular over the last few years and it’s an opportunity to predict who will be the poorest side in the tournament. Italy and Scotland have a habit of collecting the wooden spoon and the pair are usually the shortest prices in this field.

Forecast – With prices occasionally prohibitive on the tournament winner, the forecast option is favoured by ambitious punters. This requires you to predict the top two sides in the standings.

Player of the Tournament – There are always plenty of options available in the this market with all potentially pivotal players priced up. At the end of the competition, one player will be picked as the player of the tournament by a panel of writers and broadcasters. A shortlist of four is usually whittled down to just one.

Match Winner – A very straightforward way of betting in each game. Punter simply need to pick which of the two sides will win each contest. The draw is also an option although this is fairly uncommon in the Six Nations.

Handicaps – Handicap markets are a great way of extracting value from the match betting markets. They are particularly popular during one-sided affairs. These give the underdog a head-start (e.g +7 points) or offer the favourite a handicap to overcome (e.g -7 points).

To Win Both Halves – When there is very little value in the outright match betting markets, the option to win both halves is a great way to find some value. Your chosen team must be in front at both HT and FT in order to receive a pay-out.

Anytime TryScorer – Each player in the team will be priced up accordingly. Your chosen name must score a try during the game in order for the bet to land. Players in-form are often popular in these markets.

Highest Scoring Half – Some teams tend to follow specific patterns of play. If sides often need a stern half-time team-talk to get going, then backing the second to be the highest scoring half may be the best option. Some matches are slow-burners whilst others have the tendency to spring into life straightaway. The options are 1st half, 2nd half or neither.

Bobby’s Big Betting Tips for the Six Nations

Back-to-Back Win are Infrequent – it certainly isn’t impossible but teams don’t tend to dominate this tournament in successive seasons. Many of the matches are incredibly competitive and there is plenty of pride at stake which can often cause a few surprises along the way.

Clues can be found in the Autumn Internationals – The Autumn Internationals can often be key to a side’s chances at the Six Nations. Many of the teams tend to test themselves against opposition from the Southern Hemisphere and results can set a precedent for the remainder of the campaign and they can be a great of working out tactics and potential line-ups.

Continuity is Key – Sides who have a change of manager before the tournament can often take a few months to develop an understanding and find their rhythm. Settled sides tend to fare well in the tournament and experienced coaches who have played on this stage previously also enjoy more success on average.

Weather Can have an Affect on the Game – With the tournament being held in February/March, the weather can be relatively volatile. Wind, rain and sleet can make games low-scoring and low on quality as a result. Always check the forecast before placing a bet on a total points market.

Injury News Can be Vital – Rugby is a sport in which the players take a fair amount of bumps and knocks and this can result in a number of injuries. Teams who are missing key players and are forced to call up uncapped players tend to struggle in this tournament. The Six Nations is unforgiving and experience is required both on and off the pitch.

Where Can I Watch the Six Nations in the UK?

There is full coverage of the Six Nations tournament across the BBC. Each match will be shown on either BBC1 or BBC2 with extra analysis and coverage on BBC Online.

Osaka Stuns Tennis World at Flushing Meadow

Naomi.Osaka Champ

The 2018 US Open Women’s Final will forever be remembered for two things: the debut Grand Slam win of rising star Naomi Osaka, and the angry confrontation between her final opponent Serena Williams and the match umpire Carlos Ramos, which overshadowed the final result.

Osaka won the first set thanks to two service breaks, but the drama began in the second game of the second set. First Ramos penalised Williams for a coaching violation after he deemed that her coach Patrick Mouratoglou had been advising her from the stands. Williams appeared to brush off that penalty after a long conversation with the umpire, and subsequently went 3-1 up. But in the next game, Osaka broke back and Williams smashed a racket in frustration, earning a code violation and a point penalty, which meant she started the next game a point down.

Williams began to argue with the umpire intermittently, referring again to the first penalty violation. Osaka, meanwhile, held her serve to make it 3-3, then broke Williams again to lead 4-3. At this point, Williams went further, accusing the umpire of being a thief, which was deemed to be a third violation and a game penalty was awarded, giving Osaka a 5-3 lead. Although Williams appealed to the match referee, the penalty was not overruled. She won her next service game to make it 5-4, but in the midst of the drama, Osaka held her nerve to serve out and win the tournament.

For Osaka, the victory capped a remarkable year. She had started 2018 ranked 68th in the world, but a series of notable victories caught the attention of the tennis world, including her victory at the Indian Wells tournament. She climbed steadily up the rankings, and by the start of the US Open, was the youngest player inside the top twenty, ranked 17th. She benefitted from the defeats of Caroline Wozniacki and Petra Kvitova, and dropped only one set on her way to the final, where she became the first Japanese player ever to win a Grand Slam singles event.

Williams was the pre-tournament favourite, according to the implied probabilities on the bigbetbookmaker.com site, and had looked comfortable in all of her games prior to the final, with the exception of her Fourth Round win over Estonian Kaia Kanepi, who became the only woman other than Osaka to take a set from the American. Kanepi had earlier pulled off a major shock in defeating the tournament second-favourite and French Open winner Simona Halep in the First Round.

In fact, it was a tournament of shocks, in which Maria Sharapova and defending champion Angelique Kerber, along with Wozniacki and Kvitova, all departed before the quarter-finals. And the success of Osaka, along with the rise of her semi-final opponent, Madison Keys, who was reaching the last four of a Grand Slam for the second time in her career, signified a potential changing of the guard in women’s tennis and perhaps the twilight of Serena Williams’ remarkable career.
