Best Bets of the Day – Sunday, January 3rd 2019

Tom Brady e1548965444917

Leicester v Man Utd
Premier League – 2.05 pm
Sky Sports

Everywhere you look there is some massive top sporting action this weekend, and our best bets of the day for Sunday is going to focus on three such big encounters. Manchester United were embroiled in a fantastic tussle at home against Burnley in midweek. They went into the game having won all six league fixtures under interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. But heading into the final 5 minutes at Old Trafford, the Red Devils found themselves 2-0 down. Both their winning streak and undefeated streak in serious jeopardy.

But then Burnley gave them a way back into the game by conceding a penalty with 3 minutes to go. Paul Pogba duly converted. Then United found an equalising goal in the 92nd minute. While they couldn’t pull out enough to keep their winning streak going, it moved them onto a seven-match undefeated streak of form in the top flight. United have suffered just one defeat in their last 12 league games. Their home winning streak may have gone, but they will be looking for their fourth straight road victory. They make the trip to the King Power to face Leicester on Sunday. The Red Devils are 5/6 odds-on favourites to get the win.

It has been something of a strange season from Leicester. Boss Claude Puel never seems far away from his job being under threat. They haven’t exactly given the home fans a great deal to cheer about this season. The Foxes have won four of their 11 home league games only. But what they are able to bring to the table is a pretty mean defence. It helped them beat Man City recently. It helped them get a point against Liverpool in midweek.

So will that be able to help them at least avoid defeat in this fixture against a side who are right on top of their form at the moment? Understandably Leicester are underdogs but the leading bookmakers have an even money quote on them to not get beaten in a double chance option.

Manchester City v Arsenal
Premier League – 4.30 pm
Sky Sports

Just when Manchester City looked to be right back in the swing of normal service being resumed, they suffered a massive setback in their title hopes on Tuesday night. After Sergio Aguero had put them 1-0 ahead inside the first minute of their clash with Newcastle at St James Park, it looked to be another evening where the reigning champions would be cruising to victory. They totally controlled the game but they just couldn’t find the killer touch to get a second goal.

That came back to bite them. I for one never saw the turnaround in fortunes that was coming. Two defensive howlers from the Citizens threw away the points. Now their title defence gets even tougher as they try and catch Liverpool. It is back to home soil on Sunday for them, and at least Manchester City can look at the positive of having won all but one of their home games this season (L1). What kind of response to that setback against Newcastle do the Citizens?

Arsenal are a side who continue to impress and frustrate at the same time. They continued their great home form in the league with a win over Cardiff in the week. But their season in terms of a title race, or even comfortable top-four finish, has fallen short. That’s largely because of some poor away form. Arsenal have only won four times away from home this season. The Gunners have failed to win any of their last five on the road.

Basically, anyone who shows up at the Etihad Stadium would be underdogs and Arsenal are big ones at 7/1 odds to win this game. But one has to wonder if this is the perfect time for them to be going there? Manchester City were dealt a heavy blow to their confidence. This game has is a pretty strong promise of goals. Let the fun begin!

New England at LA Rams
Super Bowl NFL – 11.30 am
BBC

With such a late start for the Super Bowl, it is going to be time to put on an extra pot of coffee. It’s time to get those matchsticks out to prop up eyelids. This NFL showdown is a massive spectacle and for this season’s match, there is the New England Patriots, starting as slight 8/11 favourites to claim victory over the LA Rams. The Patriots are in their third straight Super Bowl. Things didn’t go to plan for them last year at this stage, losing to the Philadelphia Eagles.

It will be all eyes on veteran quarterback Tom Brady who is trying to become the most successful player ever in the sport by winning his sixth Super Bowl ring. He is going to be opposed by the young and exciting Rams quarterback Jared Goff. Goff has just led his team through some immense displays of attacking power this season. The Rams are 11/10 odds to pick up the victory in this match and given their stats, given their higher ranking over the Patriots in yards gained and overall points for the season, this could once again, be another very special Super Bowl fixture.

Brooks Koepka Triumphs in PGA Championship Epic

Tiger.Woods Brooks.Koepka

After four days of ultra-competitive golf in sweltering conditions at the Bellerive Town and Country Club, Missouri, the 2018 PGA Championship produced an epic clash between a rising star and one of the greatest golfers ever, as Tiger Woods duelled with Brooks Koepka for the title.

Koepka had already made a little history earlier in the summer, when he became the first man since Curtis Strange in 1989 to successfully defend the US Open title, but going into the PGA Championship, he was only the ninth favourite to win the tournament, based on the implied probabilities on the bigbetbookmakers.com site, one place ahead of Tiger Woods.

The fourteen-time Major winner went into the PGA Championship on the back of a remarkable resurgence. Having failed to break the top ten of any Major tournament since 2013, and after five years in which his retirement was prophesised on multiple occasions, Woods had produced a superb late charge at the British Open, to finish sixth, and for the first time in many years, he was going into a Major tournament with a realistic chance of being involved in the finish.

But the two players who would end up duelling for the trophy both made slow starts. Neither figured in the top ten at the end of the first round, although a 69 from Koepka and a 70 from Woods kept them both in contention going into Friday. That was the day when Koepka made his move. In a weather-interrupted round, he shot a course-record-tying score of 63, along with Charl Schwartzel, to move within two shots of the leader Gary Woodland and one behind Kevin Kisner.

Both Woodland and Kisner fell away during Saturday’s play, but Koepka continued to play consistent golf, shooting a 66 to take over the lead going into the final day. But four shots back, Woods had begun to creep into contention after two solid rounds of 66 that put him in a six-way tie for sixth place to set up a dramatic Sunday outside St Louis.

The final round began well for Koepka, who picked up a birdie on the first, but bogeys at the fourth and fifth set him back, and saw Woods close to within one shot, along with Justin Thomas. Koepka dug deep at the end of the front nine, scoring three consecutive birdies, but Woods staying in touch, and at the start of the back nine, was only three shots behind. That gap closed to one as Woods, to the delight of the Bellerive crowds, birdied the twelfth and thirteenth.

But Koepka wasn’t done. He picked up birdies at 15 and 16, while Woods was overtaken by Adam Scott. The Australian dropped a shot at the last, and the packed stands at the eighteenth roared as Woods birdied it, to finish a superb round of 64, his best ever final round at a Major tournament. With the trophy in his grasp, Koepka may have been feeling the pressure, but he didn’t show it, making par on the 17th and 18th holes to finish with a solid 66, in the process becoming the first player since Woods to win the US Open and the PGA Championship in the same season.

Worcester Crowned Twenty20 Blast Champions of 2018

Worcestershire Rapids

Over the years, the English domestic Twenty20 cricket tournament has provided some thrilling finishes, and 2018 was no exception as Worcestershire Rapids won the competition for the first time on a dramatic Finals day at Edgbaston in mid-September.

The Rapids were regarded as rank outsiders before the competition started. According to the implied probabilities on the bigbetbookmakers.com site, only Leicestershire had longer odds of success, but the Rapids were boosted by the return of England international Moeen Ali.

The Worcestershire stalwart had often been unavailable for county duty, but in 2018, he was appointed captain for the Twenty20 tournament and brought a level of commitment and calm, but decisive leadership to the role, bringing together a team made up largely of unheralded talents and steering them to Finals Day. Along the way, they’d topped the North Division, winning nine of their thirteen games, and secured a comfortable five-wicket win over Gloucestershire in the last eight.

Up against a strong Lancashire Lightning team in the semi-finals, the Rapids put on a dominant performance, restricting Lancashire to 149 to set up the final against Sussex Sharks. The high-scoring Sharks had been impressive in their semi-final, registering a huge total of 202, which Somerset were unable to match. Worcestershire, bowling first, restricted them to a modest score of 157, but chasing any target in a final is traditionally seen as a difficult task.

With 14 balls to go, Worcestershire still needed 25 runs to win, but fortunately they had the star of Finals Day, Ben Cox, at the crease. Up against one of the finest death bowlers in Twenty20 cricket, Chris Jordan, Cox swiped an audacious six back over the bowler’s head to cut the required target to 19 from 13, and bring up a huge roar from the Worcestershire supporters.

The Rapids needed 17 to win from 12, but off the second ball of the 18th over, Joffra Archer completely miscalculated, bowling a beamer that went for six wides. Cox then capitalised from the free hit next ball, smashing a six over the leg side boundary, and with four runs needed for victory, he obliged off the very next ball, guiding it through square leg to bring up a famous win.

Cox finished with 46 not out and the Man of the Match award, to go with his 55 in the semi-final, to cap a remarkable Finals Day for the wicket-keeper, who earlier in the week had been left out of Worcestershire’s County Championship squad for their game against Surrey. And along with the all-round contributions of Moeen Ali, who powered the Rapids with bat and ball, Worcestershire were also boosted by the guile of the tournament’s top bowler Pat Brown, a young medium pacer whose subtle variations kept a lid on the Sussex innings, and who ended the T20 Blast with 31 wickets.

Worcestershire are the 13th team to win the Blast in its 16 seasons, and no team has been able to retain their title in the tournament’s history, so the Rapids will face a tough challenge next year in what promises to be another exciting and wide-open Twenty20 festival.

Best Bets of the Day – Saturday, February 2nd 2019

England Rugby e1548911415113

Tottenham v Newcastle
Premier League – 12.30pm
Sky Sports

What a massive day of sport Saturday’s going to be, and so for my best bets of the day preview, I’m going to keep things shorter to squeeze in more events. I will kick things off in the EPL with Tottenham v Newcastle. Injuries are a cruel thing for managers and us punters alike. Tottenham have been hit hard recently with a fairly hefty injury list, including Harry Kane and Dele Ali.

After crashing out of both the EFL cup and the FA Cup in the space of a week, they scraped a late come-from-behind win at home against Watford back in the EPL in midweek. Even with two defeats in their last five and a depleted lineup, Spurs are 2/5 odds to win this with the leading bookies.

What makes this clash fascinating is that Newcastle will be arriving at Wembley in high spirits having caused one of the shocks of the season. The Magpies beat Manchester City on Tuesday night after being behind as early as the first minute. Will the Magpies be able to defy their 13/2 underdog status with leading bookmakers to be a thorn in the side of Tottenham’s top four ambitions?

Scotland v Italy
Six Nations Rugby – 2.15 pm
BBC

Scotland will be more than delighted to have received this opening fixture for the 2019 Six Nations. It is actually the reverse of the fixture from the last round of action at the 2018 edition of the tournament. Last year’s Six Nations clash between Italy and Scotland produced a thriller. Italy looked as if they were on their way to the first victory of their campaign, holding a two point advantage with less than 5 mins on the clock. But it was Scotland’s Greig Laidlaw who broke the hearts of the Italians in Rome. He fired his one and only penalty kick of the entire match through the middle of the posts in the 79th minute.

There have actually been some decent scraps between these two sides recently, but Scotland has won their last two games against Italy at Murrayfield by large margins of at least 20 points. While results don’t seem to go to Italy’s way, there were some improved performances from them last season. The bookmakers have a very generous +25 handicap at even money on them. It’s the same price as Scotland doing enough to cover a victory by that margin. The Scots are on a six match winning streak against the Italians.

Ireland v England
Six Nations Rugby – 4.45
ITV

The main event. What a mouthwatering clash we have in Dublin on Saturday evening in the Six Nations. Will this turn out to be an early title decider? These are the leading two of the six competing teams to go and get their hands on the title. It is Ireland who is defending the title after winning all of their fixtures in 2018 to claim the Grand Slam. They did that in dramatic fashion as well, completing the full house in a big away game at Twickenham against England in their last match.

Will England be able to produce something very special on the road and overcome some poor form that they have in Dublin? In the last decade, England have lost four of their last six visits to Ireland. This is the toughest away game that they could have received to open with. This should be an immense test of character in what should prove to be another epic battle between the two. The bookmakers are offering a -9/+9 handicap in favour of Ireland at even money.

Warrington v Leeds
Super League Rugby – 5.00 pm
Sky Sports

The new season of the Super League is upon us and this is a huge clash between Warrington and Leeds. Leeds went into last season’s campaign as the reigning champions but their season fell apart. Badly. The Rhinos at one point suffered 10 straight defeats. With a failure to make it to the Super 8s, they have had to go through a bit of a reboot. Will they be able to make a strong statement in their opening fixture and take down one of the other leading contenders for this season’s grand final title? Leeds are 15/8 underdogs with leading bookmakers to pull off the away win.

Warrington are the joint 4/1 favourites alongside St Helens to be crowned outright champions this year. That was after their surprise run to last season’s showcase match, where they lost against Wigan. But it was in their semi-final match against favourites St Helens that we saw the best of the Wolves. On home soil for their opener, they go as 4/7 favourites. There are new rules in place the season to make the Super League more dynamic and fast paced. I’m hoping to see a prime example of those advancements in this heavyweight clash.

Peter Wright v Adrian Lewis
Darts masters – 10.15 pm
ITV

The Darts Masters 2019 certainly is not disappointing, as there are some cracking first round matches. This is the real highlight of the first round though as far as I’m concerned. Two-time world champion Adrian Lewis has a pretty decent track record at the Masters from his five previous visits. He was a losing finalist in 2013 and since then he’s at least made the quarter-finals in three of his other appearances, two of the last three have been semi-final exits.

The bookmakers are expecting a tight battle in this one it would seem as underdog Lewis is 11/10 odds for the win. ‘Snakebite’ Peter Wright has not been in the greatest of form over the last four months or so. He has been a fairly consistent performer at the Masters though having reached the quarter-finals in each of the last four years but never having gone any further. It’s a late-night start in Milton Keynes for this particular battle. Will Wright be able to defend his position as 8/11 odds on favourite? Lewis actually leads the head-to-head 18-13 over Peter Wright.

Best Bets of the Day – Friday February 1st 2019

france rugby e1548880773370

France v Wales
Six Nations Rugby – 8.00 pm
BBC

The opening fixture of the RBS Six Nations 2019 features France hosting Wales on Friday night and what a place to start for the best bets of the day! This is an important opener for both of them because there is nothing like getting a good bit of early momentum going in a campaign. France are still badly searching for that ‘missing something’ from their game, having struggled with inconsistencies and quality for the past several years. It feels like a long time ago that I was watching a France team put together a strong Six Nations title challenge.

But they were a little bit more consistent last season in the Championships. France did only win two games in the campaign but they pushed eventual Grand Slam champions Ireland close in Paris, losing by just two points. They collected a bonus point in a defeat at Murrayfield against Scotland, and of course, beat England. Last season’s campaign ended with a one-point defeat for the French in Wales.

Wales have won six of their last seven games against France and so should really be having nothing to fear in this one. The Dragons collected three wins in their RBS Six Nations 2017 campaign, but they were home victories over Scotland, Italy and the French. I can only see this being another excitingly close game between the two nations, and the leading bookmakers have France as the narrow favourites at 20/21 odds. But then Les Bleus have struggled recently to get a grip on the Welsh running game. More likely than not the visitors are going to be well in this game and can’t totally be written off as even money underdogs.

Hannover v Leipzig
Bundesliga – 7.30 pm
BT Sport

There is good action from the German top-flight look forward to on Friday night. In it, Hannover will continue to strive for a way to get away from their looming relegation issues. They start the game second from bottom in the Bundesliga, and they are out of form as well having lost their last three fixtures. They have only taken the two wins all season, but a positive is that those victories were on home soil. However, they have lost each of their last four home games in the Bundesliga without scoring. Hannover are big 9/2 underdogs to pull off three points in this game with the top bookmakers.

What makes this fixture interesting for me is the way that Hannover handled themselves on their trip to Leipzig earlier this season. They gave a really good account of themselves going down in a 3-2 reverse. Leipzig are sat in fourth place heading into the weekend of action. However, their push for a place in Europe next season is basically coming down to their home form. They have won just three times on their travels this season. The most recent one was a 4-0 victory at Düsseldorf in their last road game. Home and away combined they have alternated between a defeat and a win in their last eight league fixtures. Certainly, inconsistencies are there. Leipzig are the 8/15 odds-on favourites to get the victory in this game but could be in for a tricky night away from home.

Preston v Derby
Championship – 7.45 pm
Sky Sports

Friday night’s Championship action comes from Deepdale as Preston play host to the promotion-chasing Derby. It has been far from a great season from Preston who are simply floating around in the bottom half of the second tier. But there has been a bit of cheer for them lately. They snapped a five-match winless streak with back-to-back wins over Stoke and QPR. Despite their lowly league standing, they have actually done well at Deepdale. Preston have lost just one of their last nine league outings there. Will they be able to frustrate points out of Derby? It is Preston actually who are the 6/5 favourites at top bookmakers for this game.

That is largely because of their good form at Deepdale, and the fact that Derby have lost two of their last three away games. But that has to be put into context because those away defeats were at two of the current top three in the league. Derby have lost four away games this season against sides currently 15th or lower. However, they have shown time and time again away from home this season, that they can grind out results. Five of their six away wins have been by a one-goal margin only. The Rams are a general 11/5 to get the way win under their belt.

Mensur Suljovic v Simon Whitlock
Darts Masters – 8.15
ITV

Friday is a busy night of darts action as the first round of the 2019 Masters get underway. One of the best looking matches of the night features Mensur Suljovic taking on Simon Whitlock. It is Austria’s Suljovic who heads into the match as the 4/9 odds-on favourite. However the head-to-head between him and Australia’s Whitlock is pretty close. They have met 14 times before throughout their careers with Suljovic edging that 8-6.

This should be a really gripping contest and the two of them. They met five times during the 2018 calendar year. Again from that smaller head-to-head section, things were tight with Suljovic taking a 3-2 lead. It does perhaps make the 7/4 odds with the leading bookmakers on Whitlock a little inflated. Either way, whatever the outcome of the Masters dual, it would not be a huge surprise to see it go the distance.

Big Bets Bobby’s Take on the Ted Cheeseman VS Sergio Garcia Fight!

Ted.Cheeseman.VS .Sergio.Garcia 1

This weekend features two stacked bills from either side of the Atlantic. The bigger of the two comes from Texas, as the Krusher, Sergey Kovalev, looks to inflict revenge on the WBO light-heavyweight champion who ripped his belt from him in August last year, Eleider Alvarez.

The Colombian stopped Kovalev in the seventh round in one of the shocks of the boxing year; it’ll soon be telling whether Kovalev has turned old overnight, or the Russian slugger simply had a bad night at the office.

The other big card comes from East London, as Ted Cheeseman challenges Sergio Garcia for the EBU super welterweight title in front of a predicted 6,000 strong crowd. The Big Cheese is being dubbed as one of the next big stars coming from the Matchroom stable, and is a 4/11 favourite to get the job done against the Spaniard on Saturday night.

Cheeseman and Alvarez to win @ 2.3/1 [BetVictor]

It’s a double that returns a good price. After dissecting the first Kovalev vs. Alvarez fight last August it’s hard to see what more the Krusher can do. The 35-year-old challenger has had a tough two years suffering back-to-back defeats against Andre Ward, two knock-over jobs against Shabranskyy and Mikhalkin and then the loss of his WBO 175-pound title.

Alvarez won the first fight in devastating fashion. It was a big KO which many thought would spell the end of the Krusher’s career, however, he has taken the rematch looking to gain revenge for his third professional loss. Alvarez was faster, sharper, smarter and more accurate last August, and with a desire to get back into training camp surely wilting for the Russian, this time around it may be more emphatic.

Kovalev hasn’t got any quit in him, but he may not be able to accept that he is finished at the highest level. Alvarez is unbeaten in the pro ranks with notable wins over the faded Chilemba, Bute and Pascal; the timing of his rise in the light-heavy division has been faultless.

Now for Cheeseman. The Bermondsey-boy will be fighting a mile away from where he grew up, with a huge support expected inside the O2 Arena. Garcia is unbeaten in his 28 professional contests, but is yet to fight out of his native Spain where he has recorded 13 KOs. Garcia picked up the vacant EBU crown last September, but is looking to cash out in a trip to London to face an unbeaten fighter for just the third time in his career.

It’s unlikely that Garcia has the power to stop the exciting Cheeseman, and with the Spaniard unlikely to get a decision on the cards in London – especially against a high-volume fighter like Cheeseman – it’s hard to see Garcia coming away with the W.

Tampa Bay Blazing a Trail in 2018-19 Stanley Cup Hunt

Tampa.Bay .Lightning.NHL

Tampa Bay Lightning are leading the way in the 2018-19 NHL season, dominating the Eastern Conference and laying down a marker for the rest of the League.

After losing out in the Conference Finals to the eventual Stanley Cup champions Washington Capitals last year, the Lightning were rated as narrow favourites in a wide open competition this year, according to the implied probabilities displayed on the Bigbetbookmakers.com site, but they have made it a procession in the East. Going into the All Star break, Tampa Bay held a thirteen point lead over their nearest challengers, the New York Islanders, and a fourteen point lead over their nearest challengers in the Atlantic Division, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In their wake, none of the other Eastern teams have been able to put together consistent form to close the gap, including the defending champions. The Capitals were going okay heading into January, but a record of 0-5-2 in seven games going into the All-Star Weekend saw them slip behind the Islanders in the Metropolitan Division, with the Columbus Blue Jackets close behind and nine teams jostling for Wild Card spots, separated by only a few points.

The battle in the West is looking a lot more open. Calgary Flames lead the way, and have opened up a small gap on their pursuers. Along with last season’s pace setters, the Nashville Predators, the Flames, the San Jose Sharks, Winnipeg Jets and Vegas Golden Knights – last season’s Stanley Cup runners-up, all look good for play-off spots, but behind them, there is a ferocious fight developing for the final play-off position the two Wild Card places.

The Minnesota Wild are in a strong position are at the front of the chasing pack, but there are seven other teams in realistic contention. Of those, the Dallas Stars and the Colorado Avalanche both have an advantage, as they hold tiebreaking wins over another contender, the Vancouver Canucks.

Anaheim Ducks are another potential Wild Card team, but they have hit a run of bad form at the wrong time, winning only two out of sixteen games going into the All-Star break, and they also have a tough medium-term schedule, which will see them play a string of road games in the next month. The Arizona Coyotes also have a difficult upcoming schedule, while the Edmonton Oilers are hoping that a change of General Manager will give their play-off hopes a boost, after they fired Peter Chiarelli at the end of January.

With the trade deadline looming at the end of February, there is still time for a number of teams to reshuffle and reshape their rosters, and Columbus in particular have tough trade and contract decisions to make as star players Artemi Panarin and Sergei Bobrovsky are eye-catching potential free agents in July. But so far in 2018-19, no team has yet suggested they can match Tampa Bay who boast two of the league’s top seven scorers in Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point, along with a top five goaltender, Andrei Vasilevskiy, and will be tough opponents in the Stanley Cup Play-Offs.
