Best Bets of the Day – Sunday April 14th 2019

Liverpool Premier League

Chinese Grand Prix
F1 – 7.05 am
Sky Sports

After a great second race of the season out in Bahrain, new Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc was the talk of the town. Punters will probably be eying him up as one of the best bets of the day on Sunday. The French diver dominated the race after a slightly dodgy start and he looked to be cruising to a victory. That was until his hybrid system failed him late on. He eventually finished third and probably would have finished lower if it hadn’t been for a safety car intervention.

But the sheer speed and control with which he drove has propelled him to the head of the market for the 2019 Chinese Grand Prix. Leclerc is the 6/4 favourite to land his first career win in what is the 1000th Formula One race. I don’t remember the last time that it wasn’t Lewis Hamilton or Sebastian Vettel as a race favourite. However, Ferrari haven’t had a great time of things in this particular race, winning one of the last eleven editions only. Lewis Hamilton, who claimed the win in Bahrain after Leclerc’s engine problem, is at 11/4 to get his second win of the season.

Crystal Palace v Manchester City
Premier League – 2.05 pm
Sky Sports

The Eagles have already tripped up Manchester City once this season, can they do it again? Back in December Crystal Palace pulled off a shock 3-2 win at the Etihad, becoming the first side to beat the Citizens on home soil this season. Will they be able to cause the reigning champions more headaches when they welcome them to Selhurst Park on the weekend? This is not going to be an easy trip for the Citizens.

Palace are 17/2 underdogs to win the game with leading bookmakers, and they have lost four of their five home games this season against sides in the top-six (D1). But even if they can’t pick up a win, can they prevent Man City from doing so? If so, that would put a huge dent in City’s title ambitions for this season. The Eagles have only won four home games all season and they average under a goal per game at Selhurst Park. They are also facing an in-form team.

Man City have won their last eight Premier League games, scoring at last two goals in six of those wins. They have only conceded the one goal in their last seven played. Leading bookmakers have them as short as 11/10 to win to nil on the weekend and their last four road successes have all been with a clean sheet. But they looked far from their best in a home win over Cardiff last weekend and again in midweek losing at Spurs in the Champions League. This is bigger test than it looks for them to overcome.

Liverpool v Chelsea
Premier League – 4.30 pm
Sky Sports

Liverpool will be getting a stern test on the weekend in their title campaign. The Reds are on a four-match winning streak in the league at the moment, unbeaten since their loss at the start of the year against Man City in the EPL. Even though in recent matches they have found themselves rattled and haven’t looked at their best, they are still finding ways to win. Their home form is so impressive at W14 D2 L0 this season that it’s hard to deny their favouritism of 3/5 odds by leading bookmakers for this game.

When the two met at Stamford Bridge in September, Liverpool rescued a point with a late goal. Chelsea have a bit of wind in their sails at the moment with a three-match winning streak going, albeit against sides in the bottom half of the table. They have lost four of their last six away from home though, so that’s where the 9/2 underdog tag comes from. Can the Blues throw a wrench in Liverpool’s title plans, while boosting their own chances of a top-four finish? Chelsea do have a lot to play for here and they are W1 D3 on their last four visits to Anfield.

Wigan v Norwich
Championship – 12 noon
Sky Sports

Norwich are flying towards the Premier League once again. They have a commanding lead at the top of the Championship table and will be looking at this game against Wigan as a great chance to take another step towards lifting the title. Norwich are cruising basically with ten wins in their last twelve league games (D1 L1). They have put together a five-match winning streak at home and they average over two goals per home game this season.

Little surprise really that the top bookmakers have Norwich at 3/4 to win this particular duel. Wigan are under threat of relegation, starting the weekend fourth from bottom. They have only claimed one away win all season as well, losing 16 of their 21 road games. The Latics have averaged under a goal per game on their travels and are 10/3 to pick up, what would be a massive three points for them. Given that they are winless in 19 away games, it’s a tall, tall order.

Exeter v Wasps
Premiership Rugby – 3.00 pm
BT Sport

Exeter will be looking for more points to nudge their way to the Premiership title. They get a home fixture this weekend at Sandy Park which has been profitable for them in the top flight in the past. Exeter have won eight of their previous nine home games in the Premiership against Wasps, drawing the other one in that sequence. So they will be stepping out as heavy favourites in this one and the leading bookmakers have them at -15 for 10/11 odds in the handicap line. Since their loss against Gloucester in mid-February, the Chiefs have put together a five-match winning streak in the league.

Wasps have won just one of their last five league meetings against Exeter, which was in their home game against them last season when they pulled off a surprise 13-7 victory. But when they hosted them again back in September for this season’s clash, Exeter ran out 42-31 winners. Wasps were on a four-match losing streak in the top flight, including disappointing returns against bottom-three sides Leicester and Newcastle, before toppling Worcester last weekend.

Best Bets of the Day – Saturday April 13th 2019

Heung Min Son

Tottenham v Huddersfield
Premier League – 12.30 pm
Sky Sports

The Lilywhites had an exhausting fixture in midweek as they dug out a 1-0 home success over Man City in the Champions League. They need to get some momentum going back in the top flight though. A recent drop in form has left their top-four-finish ambitions in a bit of jeopardy. In their last EPL game, Spurs collected a 2-0 home win over Crystal Palace, their first ever game in their new stadium. Prior to that Spurs had put together a sequence of D1 L4.

But they are undefeated in their last five on home soil (W4 D1) as their recent flops have all been out on the road. Tottenham are as short as 20/21 with top bookmakers to win this one to nil. They will be seen as one of the best bets of the day in terms of being a Premier League home banker. They host Huddersfield who have already been relegated and the Terriers have lost nine of their last ten Premier League away games (D1). Huddersfield have only scored in one of their last seven away games as well. There’s really nothing left for them other than pride at this point. Getting anything out of this as 12/1 underdogs is going to be tough.

Gloucester v Bath
Premiership Rugby – 3.00 pm
BT Sport

A good west country derby will be doing down at Kingsholm on Saturday afternoon. Gloucester are steaming along on some brilliant form with a three-match winning streak going on home soil. That’s some big momentum and home and away they have only suffered the one defeat in their last six Premiership matches, a loss at Bristol right back at the start of March.

So the Cherry and whites go into this game as the strong odds-on favourites with leading bookmakers to the tune of 4/11. But it may not be all that cut and dry because of the head to head. Bath have a fantastic record of form going against Gloucester. They have only been beaten twice by the Cherry and Whites in the last fifteen clashes across all competitions. That has to count for something.

There was a dramatic 31-31 draw when they met at the Rec earlier this season and Bath took a resounding 43-20 win in this corresponding fixture last season at Kingsholm. There is a 10/11 quote on them to hold a +7 handicap in this game and if they are going to do so, then they are going to have shake off some terrible road form. They have won just one away game since September and none in the 2019 calendar year.

Manchester United v West Ham
Premier League – 5.30 pm
BT Sport

Manchester United are one of four teams battling for two spots for a top-four finish in the Premier League this season. United’s chances of landing in the top four have been hit with a slight dip in form recently. They have lost two of their last three Premier League games, however, both of those were away defeats. Their home form can’t really be faulted as they are undefeated in their last 13 at Old Trafford in the top flight and they have scored at least two goals in all but one of their last eight there.

So Manchester United have good home form and they claimed a 3-1 victory at West Ham earlier this season. The Red Devils are actually undefeated in their last 13 on home soil against the Hammers in all competitions. Manchester United are as short as 4/6 odds-on with leading bookmakers to win this home game. That is because West Ham are in terribly poor form away from home. The Clarets have failed to score in six of their last seven away games and they have failed to win any of those games in that sequence. The Hammers have already lost all four of their away games played against other current top five sides this season. They are big 6/1 underdogs for their trip to Old Trafford on Saturday evening

Leeds v Sheffield Wednesday
Championship – 5.30 pm
Sky Sports

Leeds moved back up to second place in the Championship in midweek thanks to a solid away win at Preston. They are having a ding-dong battle with Sheffield United for second place in the table behind runaway leaders Norwich. They are going to get a tough fixture at Elland Road on Saturday evening as they welcome the Owls. Leeds have won four of their last five on home soil though, so they are going as 1/2 odds-on favourites with leading bookmakers. But they have struggled for recent results against Wednesday.

The Owls are W2 D1 in their last three league games against the Whites, after a 1-1 draw between them at Hillsborough back at the end of September. The Owls are no pushovers at all. They haven’t lost away this season against any of the current top-eight (W3 D3) and they are currently undefeated in their last six on their Championship travels. Home and away Wednesday have lost only one of their last fourteen. They are 11/1 underdogs for this, but will their strengths be enough to frustrate Leeds once again?

Best Bets of the Day – Friday April 12th 2019

Vardy

Leicester v Newcastle
Premier League – 8.00 pm
Sky Sports

The Foxes are putting a late run at a top seven finish together. They have come to life with a four-match winning streak going at the moment in the top flight, winning five of their last six. So they are a hot ticket and they have scored at least two goals in each of their last five victories. When they step out against Newcastle on Friday night, they will be looking to extend their home winning form to four as well.

When the two met earlier this season on Tyneside, Leicester collected a 2-0 win at St James’ Park. Leicester are 7/10 with leading bookmakers to go and complete the league double over the Magpies this season. The Magpies have only won twice on the road this season and haven’t claimed a win in any of their last eight away from home. They have lost all away games played against the current top six as well. Starting five points clear of the drop zone they could do with a few more points to be comfortable. They are 17/4 to pull off the underdog success.

Newcastle v Leicester
Premiership Rugby – 7.45 pm
BT Sport

This match at Kingston Park on Friday night could have huge implications in the battle for survival at the foot of the Premiership table. Newcastle Falcons are the bottom side and need a huge performance in this home fixture to boost their survival hopes. The Falcons start three points behind second-from-bottom Worcester and five behind third-from-bottom Leicester.

So if they could get a bonus point win, the Falcons could pull level on point with the Tigers. That would be huge. Similarly, a defeat would damage them immensely with just three games to go afterwards. Newcastle have won their last two home games in the Premiership and they are 4/7 to win this outright with leading bookmakers. They were on a three-match league winning streak before a loss at Saracens last weekend.

But then Leicester will know that maximum points are likely going to be enough to keep them safe this season. The Tigers have to shake off some poor form of just one win in six. But they have suffered just two defeats in their last 18 games against the Falcons across all competitions. The Tigers have won four of the last five meetings against them, so certainly boss the head to head. The Leicester Tigers head to Kingston Park as 6/4 underdogs in what should be a mighty clash.

St Helens v Warrington
Super League Rugby – 7.45 pm
Sky Sports

This game is an interesting one now after St Helens suffered their first defeat of the season last time out. They were toppled away at the Catalans Dragons and so now this will be a first big test of character of them. Sometimes losing a big winning streak like the eight-match sequence that the Saints had been on, can totally ruin momentum. That can be hard to get back. This is not the easiest of games in which the Saints can get back to winning ways in either, as they face top side, Warrington.

Still, the Saints are 4/7 odds-on on home soil to produce the victory. Warrington have matched the Saints in terms of points, having posted an equal W8 L1 record from their nine games of this season’s competition. However, there has been a noticeable difference between the two in that the Wolves have scored almost 50 points more than the Saints have done. The leading bookmakers have a handicap of +4 on Warrington at even money to hold onto on their visit to Merseyside. This is a big clash for supremacy now and one perhaps that the Saints can’t afford to drop at home.

Vasyl Lomachenko v Anthony Crolla
Boxing – 4.30 am (Saturday)
Sky Sports

An early rise on Saturday morning for this one which is a bout going off in Los Angeles on Friday night in the USA. England’s Anthony Crolla is a big 18/1 underdog for the bout and to shock the world by taking down the Ukrainian. Any backers of that successful outcome would be pulling off a best bet of the day. Crolla has won this last three fights and his beating of Daud Yordan on points last year lined him up as the mandatory challenger for WBA and WBO lightweight champ Lomachenko.

Many have Lomachenko as the best pound for pound fighter in the world. Leading bookmakers have him at 1/6 only to win by a knockout. Lomachenko is W12 L1 in his pro career, the defeat coming in his second ever bout. Nine of his victories have been by a knockout. He was taken the distance in his last fight in December against Jose Pedraza but still got a fairly comfortable unanimous decision. Before that, he was taken all the way to the 10th round before stopping Jorge Linares, who Crolla has lost twice against on a unanimous decision.

India’s Love Affair With The World Cup

Indias Cricket World Cup 1

This summer, the nations of the cricket world will gather in England once again for a tournament that has been through many upheavals, but that has proven enduringly popular. And nowhere is it more popular than India, home to the world’s biggest audience of cricket aficionados.

India have won the World Cup twice, in 1983 and 2011, and when cricket fans tune in to the coverage of this year’s tournament on BT Sport India will once again be one of the favourites to win. In fact, they are currently rated the 3/1 second favourites with most bookmakers, with only England – who have home advantage – considered a more likely winner.

And when you look at the potential line-up that India could send to England this summer, it is not hard to see why they are so highly rated. Captain and 2018’s Cricketer of the Year Virat Kohli is a destructive and consistent batsman who at his best is impossible to bowl at. He is backed up by a host of talented batsmen including Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, KL Rahul and Risabh Pant, and India could also include the experience of MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina. Blessed with an abundance of spin bowling options and one of the wiliest pace bowling attacks in the world, India has the resources to make a serious push for World Cup glory this summer.

India’s players will once again have to cope with a weight of expectation this summer. But that hasn’t always been the case. In fact, in the early years of the World Cup, the Indian cricket public showed little interest in the limited overs games. That indifference was reflected by the performance of their team. They won only one game – against East Africa – in the inaugural tournament in 1975, and lost all three matches four years later, including a surprise defeat to Sri Lanka.

When the teams lined up again in England in 1983, few gave India much chance, and although they surprised a few people by winning their opening game against the reigning champions the West Indies, subsequent heavy defeats to the same opponents and to Australia suggested that was going to be an isolated highlight. Even when they won their final group game against the Aussies to reach the semi-finals, they were not expected to go much further.

But by this time, their progress was beginning to draw attention back home, and famous victories over England at Old Trafford, and a classic win against the West Indies at Lord’s in the final transformed the attitude of Indian fans. The Indian team returned home as heroes, and since that tournament, limited overs cricket has steadily risen to supplant Test cricket as the most popular format in India, producing many years later a spectacular national celebration when India won the 2011 World Cup on their own soil. And with the bookmakers quoted on the Bigbetbookmakers site seeing plenty of money going on Virat Kohli’s men, it would not be a surprise to see them lift the trophy again this summer.

Big Bets Bobby’s Take on the Vasyl Lomachenko vs Anthony Crolla Fight!

Vasyl.Lomachenko.vs .Anthony.Crolla

It’s looking like Mission Impossible for Anthony Crolla in Los Angeles this weekend. The proud Mancunian and former world champion takes on boxing’s pound-for-pound star Vasyl Lomachenko, for a stab at his WBA (Super) and WBO world lightweight titles.

The Staples Center will be brimming with excitement on Friday night, with an army of support expected for Crolla. Following wins in his last three fights against tough tests, Million Dolla Crolla has forged his path towards another chance of world honours, following losing his WBA strap to Jorge Linares in 2016. Crolla would go onto rematch the Venezuelan in early 2017, but lost another convincing UD.

At 32-years and with 43 grueling fights under his belt, it’s looking like the last chance for Crolla to climb the lightweight mountain once again. Looking in fantastic shape in the build-up to this fight, Crolla and his trainer Joe Gallagher are happy with their camp in preparation for this huge test; Crolla looks to be in the shape of his career, he’ll need every possible inch of improvement to cause a shock on Friday.

Vasyl Lomachenko is a scary talent. The angles, the movement, the pivots, the feints; Hi-Tech has become a phenomenon in the sport since turning pro in 2013. Just one (controversial) defeat to Orlando Salido in his second pro fight and one loss in 397 amateur fights (which he avenged twice) punctuates the skill-set that the Ukrainian two-time gold medalist possesses. Forcing stoppages against some serious A-level fighters such as Guillermo Rigondeaux, Miguel Marriaga and Nathan Walters gave him the nickname of “No-Mas-Chenko”; Crolla will have the final bell in his sights as a minimum requirement this weekend.

It’s not all been smooth-running for Loma. A flash knockdown from Jorge Linares in his tenth round win over the former world champion showed that there are potential gaps in the armor of the Matrix. Crolla’s body punching has given him the biggest successes in his career to date, so will no doubt go downstairs early on the champion, relying on his fitness in the later rounds.

The odds are startling. To be honest, you’ll struggle to find any fighter at shorter odds than 4/1 when coming into Loma’s den. Crolla is 20/1 to get the win on Friday, that’s right, 20/1.

The value lies in the distance of this fight going on Friday. Crolla is well versed in the 12-round wars that have seen him force this opportunity, so to suggest that the Mancunian may fold early in LA is a little disrespectful of his talents.

Only an injury – in all honesty – can stop Lomachenko getting the win on Friday. Loma has strolled through fighters with a much better pedigree than the Brit, so this defence of his lightweight crowns shouldn’t cause too much of a hurdle.

Crolla’s heart and guts are why this fight will become watchable in the later rounds. Loma will be eyeing a stoppage by breaking Crolla’s soul, but at the back-end of his career, Million Dolla won’t go down without a fight. He went a punishing 24 rounds with Linares without ever looking likely to throw in the towel. Crolla will need to capitalise on his size and strength in this fight if he is to see out the final bell.

Vasyl Lomachenko to win by decision or technical decision @ 7/2
Over 9.5 rounds @ 7/4

Big Sporting Events: The Open Championship

Di6nR7RX0AEmlEi

The Open Championship is an annual golf tournament held in the UK, and is one of the four major championships which take place throughout the year. It is also simply referred to as the “The Open” or occasionally the “British Open”.

Unlike other Majors, the location of the Open is flexible, and it tends to change each year. It is the oldest of the four majors, and is watched by millions of golf fans across the world. It is the only one of the four majors to be played outside of the United States, and golf aficianados regularly travel the globe in order to attend the event.

It is traditionally held in mid-July, although this is also a moveable feast. Prior to 2019, it was the penultimate golf major of the season, but due to recent restructuring, it has now the last of the four to take place.

Having been in existence since 1860, the tournament is one of the most prestigious on the sporting calendar, and will be taking place for the 148th time in 2019. The first ever staging of the event was held at Prestwick Golf Club in Ayrshire. This venue has hosted the event 24 times in total.

The Open Championship has many traditions, and it is always held at coastal links golf course. This is seen as the ideal way to maintain the traditions and origins of the inaugural staging. These courses tend to be “shaped”, as opposed to be built, and windy conditions can often play a huge part in determining the outcome of the tournament.

As well as Prestwick, St.Andrews is another regular venue for the Open Championship, whilst Royal Lytham St.Annes, Muirfield and Royal Birkdale have also held the event on multiple occasions.

The winner will receive a claret jug, and this has been the tradition since 1873. The engravers will add the name of the winner to the trophy before the presentation can be made. Players will get to keep the Claret Jug for twelve months before being asked to return it.

156 players take to the course in mid-July, and takes the format of 72 hole stroke play. Each competitor will play the 18 holes across the first two days, and then the 70 players who make the cut will do it all over again on the Saturday and Sunday.

The prize money for the winner of the Open Championship currently stands at $10.5million.

Francesco Molinari was the most recent champion in 2018. Other recent winners include Jordan Spieth, Zach Johnson and Phil Mickelson. Harry Vardon still holds the record for the most victories in the Open Championship with six victories between 1896 and 1914. Jack Nicklaus has seven runners-up finishes to his name.

When and Where?

The Open is typically held in mid-July and is staged at various courses across the UK. 2019 will mark just the second time that the tournament has been held in Northern Ireland.

Why is the Open Championship so Popular?

As one of the four golf majors, the Open Championship was always going to be hugely popular. It is a chance for golf fans to see their favourite players in action, and it is always a hugely competitive four days. With 156 players to be whittled down, there is always plenty of drama and excitement.

The event is also televised in the UK, and the round-the-clock coverage also helps its popularity.

From a betting perspective, there are always plenty of opportunities for golf obsessives to enjoy a wager on the event.

What Betting Opportunities are Available?

Although golf diehards tend to place wagers all-year-round, the Open tends to attract those who are less likely to follow the PGA and European Tour action on a weekly basis.

As well as all of the usual betting opportunities, punters also have a number of extra markets to enjoy. Bookies will offer enchanced offerings, and they will provide additional match-bets and 2-balls during the opening couple of days.

Key Betting Markets

Open Championship Winner – This is the most popular market, and also one of the simplest. It is a chance for punters to predict which player will come out on top and collect the prestigious claret jug. The Open Championship tends to have a number of different winners, and it is uncommon for players to successfully defend their title. This allows plenty of scope for bigger price selections. Most bookies will offer 1/5 of the odds for your player to finish in the top five. However, during the majors most operators will offer additional places.

First Round Leader – This is a market which has become increasingly popular over the last couple of years, and allows bettors to predict which player will be leading after the first day of golf is complete. In order to receive a pay-out, your player must be top of the leaderboard once every single player has completed their first round of golf. Punters should look for typically fast starters.

Second Round Leader – Same as above, but your chosen player must be leading after the second day of action (Friday).

Top Ten Finish – Similar to betting each-way on the outright market, but this will pay out in full if your chosen player manages to secure a top ten finish. Players must finish in one the top ten spots (including ties) at the end of Sunday.

Top Twenty Finish – As above, but with twenty places. This is suitable for those big-priced outsiders, who might just be underrated by the market.

To Miss the Cut – After the first 36 holes, the field will be chopped in half. Those players with the lowest scores will progress and get to do it all over again on Saturday and Sunday. The rest will be heading home. If you fancy a player to finish outside of the top 70, you can back them to miss the cut, and have their Open Championship hopes curtailed.

Top Australian/Top Japanese/Top Swedish etc – The bookies have every nationality covered. With players hailing from all over the world, there are a plethora of different markets to enjoy. Punters can predict who will be the highest finishing player from their nation. This is a great way of betting without having to predict the winner of the tournament itself.

Winning Margin – This is another clever way of avoiding an outright prediction. It allows bettors to predict whether a play-off will be required, or whether the eventual winner will triumph by a single stroke etc.

Nationality of the Winner – Punters can predict which country the player will come from. This can be particularly handy if there are several top players hailing from the US or the UK. It helps narrow down the field without having to make a commitment.

Bobby’s Big Betting Tips for the Open Championship

Horses for Courses – With the tournament being staged at multiple events, it can be a good opportunity to use local knowledge to your advantage. It is recommended that you read up on the undulations of the course, and focus on the players who have previously enjoyed success in that part of the world previously. Local players always have an immediate advantage, but certain players just simply feel more comfortable competing on a particular courses.

If there are very few players who haven’t tackled the course previously, it can be advantageous to analyse similar venues on the PGA or European tour.

Weather Conditions – The Open Championship is generally played on a coastal course, and anyone who has ever lived in close proximity to the sea will know that blustery conditions are likely – even in July.

Sudden changes in wind direction can affect the outcome of the tournament, and conditions can often cause slower conditions on the greens. This makes it very different to the majority of the PGA Tour venues, and this could affect several players in the field.

Lower ball flights are not uncommon at this tournament as players desperately look to avoid a wind-affected outcome, and this should be factored into your bets.

Always check to see how a player has coped with blustery conditions previously. If it knocks him off-kilter or greatly affects his game, it may be worth backing him to miss the cut.

Value Lies Outside of the Outright Markets – The outright markets are extremely fun, but savvy punters tend to wait until the field has been greatly reduced. Outright markets are available throughout the tournament, and bettors will be able to predict the overall winner on Sunday.

Instead, it is often better to stick to different markets. Match Bets (Player A to beat Player B) are a good way of playing the opening couple of days, whilst the aforementioned markets relating to nationality and players mkaing the cut are often the best way of finding value.

Those who don’t fancy waiting until Sunday for a potential pay-out should have a look at the first-round leader markets.

Where Can I Watch the Open Championship?

Sky Sports have had the rights to show the Open Championship in the UK since 2015. Viewers can enjoy round-the-clock coverage on their dedicated golf channel.

BOBBY’S BEST WEEKEND BETTING EVENTS – 12TH-13TH APRIL

D3Dq5afW0AARYBd

Soccer – Championship – Leeds vs Sheffield Wednesday

The Championship promotion race continues to intrigue and amaze us, and there’s another set of crucial fixtures taking place this weekend. The games are coming thick and fast, and these sides are fresh off the back of tough midweek outings, but this should be a fascinating tussle, and it’s the first of my big betting events for this weekend.

Leeds slipped up seven days ago when they were defeated by Birmingham, and they will be desperate to avoid another  loss. This fixture is always played with a teriffic intensity, and that’s why I can’t wait to sit down and watch this game.

It’s an intriguing betting contest because Leeds look set to start at a very short price. Wednesday have been in excellent form recently, and their loss to Aston Villa-aside, Steve Bruce’s men will be hard to beat once again. Their play-off aspirations have probably fallen by the wayside, but there are Yorkshire bragging rights on offer here.

The Owls have a number of danger men, with the likes of Adam Reach, Barry Bannan and the enigma that is Fernando Forestieri all set to feature, and they will certainly give Leeds plenty of problems.

Leeds are still sweating on the fitness of Pablo Hernandez, and if he starts this game, that could change the dynamic of the tie.

The other narrative in this fixture is that a Sheffield Wednesday fixture would hand Sheffield United a significant advantage. Although Owls fans will be hoping to get three points on the board, would they really want to help send the Owls one step closer to the Premier League?

That makes this fixture a hugely enticing 90 minutes, and it should be played at a 100mph.

Wednesday won their last away trip to Elland Road, picking up a 2-1 victory here in March 2018, and they will be hoping to repeat that trick once more.

With runaway leaders facing struggling Wigan the following day, Leeds could potentially close the gap on the Canaries, but this will be far from straightforward for them.

Championship fans in the UK can enjoy watching this potentially pulsating tie on Sky Sports Main Event

Aussie Rules – AFL – Geelong Cats vs Greater Western Sydney

It’s still early days in the 2019 AFL season, but I love tuning in for my early-morning fix of Aussie Rules. Geelong are the early pacesetters, and they’ll be aiming to maintain that momentum when they take on Greater Western Sydney. It’s the second of my big betting events for this weekend.

Geelong were mightily impressive last weekend, and they look unstoppable on current form. They’re an absolute dream to watch at the moment, and Patrick Dangerfield is the man to watch. He completed 32 disposals against his former team-mates. Their 24-point victory at the Adelaide Oval kep their unbeaten streak alive, and they are the team to catch at the top of the AFL standings.

Gryan Miers was another player who impressed last week kicking three goals during their convincing victory, and he will be hoping to repeat that feat against the GWS.

This match is intriguing because Saturday’s opponents will surely provide the Cat’s stiffest test to date, and it’ll be a real test of their credentials.

Greater Western Sydney have won two of their first three AFL games, with decisive victories against the Tigers and the Bombers. They did slip against the West Coast Eagles, but they are the third highest points scorers in the division.

Last season, they lost heavily to Geelong during round seven, and were rarely competitive in that tie. Tom Hawkins and Tim Kelly ran riot during their last meeting, and the former has already put in a number of impressive performances in 2019.

GWS haven’t won any of their last four visits to face Geelong, and they are struggling for form on the road. Whilst they are able to pick up the occasional victory on their travels, they rarely fare well against contenders, and they could struggle to cope with the pace and power of the Cats.

This is a superbly exciting AFL match-up this weekend, and arguably the tie of the weekend. Many fans are waiting for Geelong to show some chinks in their armour, but they’ve looked incredibly tight so far, and this is unlikely to be a step too far for the Cats.

Soccer – Premier League – Southampton vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

The third of my big betting events comes from the Premier League, with Southampton hosting Wolves at St.Marys.

It’ll be interesting to see if Wolves can bounce back from their FA Cup disappointment, and Nuno must get his side focused on their quest for European football. Although they have a game in hand, Wolves are now level on points with Leicester City, and they can’t afford to lose any more ground to the resurgent Foxes.

Despite their relatively lofty position, Wolves have had a real problem against sides in the bottom half of the table, especially on the road. It’s a curious trend, and one which hasn’t been factored into the betting markets here. They have lost at Burnley and Huddersfield recently, and also slipped up against Cardiff and Brighton. The relegated Terriers have won just three times all season, with two of those victories coming against the men from Molineux – Extraordinary.

Southampton are still battling away and trying to stave off relegation, and they match the profile of the sort of side who could give Wolves problems. As the home side, they could be underestimated in this one.

Ralph Hassenhutl has done a superb job since taking over on the South Coast, and his side are likely to be up for this. They put in a superb performance against Liverpool, but began to tire in the late stages, and they’ve had two days extra rest here.

They are five points above the drop zone, and realistically should have enough to survive, but this the sort of game that they will view as extremely winnable. The fans will get behind the team, and the manner of Wolves’ defeat last weekend may help turn this tie in the Saints favour.

It’s going to be a fascinating match-up, and I can’t wait to sit down and follow all of the action from St.Marys.

Boxing – Vasyl Lomachenko vs Anthony Crolla

We head to Los Angeles for my fourth and final big betting event this weekend as Anthony Crolla looks to cause an upset against Vasyl Lomachenko.

Crolla isn’t expected to win this, but he seems confident of causing an upset. It would be one of the most unexpected results in the history of the sport, and although the odds are stacked against him, I can’t wait to see how he approaches this fight.

The Ukranian is a tour de force, and he is a consecutive Olympic Gold Medal winner. Lomachenko will be defending his WBA and WBO titles here, and he is expected to have a relatively trouble-free evening.

Crolla’s trainer Joe Gallagher has spoken of his ability to overcome adversity, and the camp seem quietly confident of a high quality performance from the Mancunian. This is one of his toughest tests yet, but he loves facing top level performers, and will relish the opportunity to take on an opponent who boasts a 12-1 record since turning professional.

Crolla will have the opportunity to get his hands on the WBA, WBO and the Ring lightweight belts, and he will surely be dreaming of a heros welcome if he can complete the unthinkable here.

Many believe he is out of his depth here, but he will compete with plenty of heart, and that could help him stretch this one out.

Realistically, a shock seems unlikely in this one, and the betting reflects that. However, there are several other markets which I will be studying closely ahead of this bout.

Sky Sports Action will be showing the full card on Saturday night from Los Angeles.
