Big Sporting Events: Community Shield

DdZYMXAADm

The Community Shield is a one-off game which is held at the beginning of August. It is seen as a pre-cursor to the Premier League season, which typically gets underway the following week.

The match is played between the previous season’s Premier League champions and the FA Cup winners. If one of the side has completed the double, the team who finished second in the top flight will be invited to take part instead.

It is currently held at Wembley Stadium, although it was originally played at Stamford Bridge in West London. A number of different venues have hosted the event including Old Trafford, Maine Road, White Hart Lane and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff (when Wembley was being re-built)

The first Community Shield was played in 1908, and it was originally designed to replace the Sheriff of London Charity Shield which has been competed for the last 13 years until the amateurs fell out with the FA. The very first fixture was played between Manchester United and Queens Park Rangers, with the latter being the Southern League Champions. This game is the only Community Shield is the only Community Shield fixture to require a replay following a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes.

The Shield wasn’t contested between the league champions and the FA Cup winners until 1921, although the 1927 contest saw the return of the professionals vs amateurs format for one year only.

The 1950 Community Shield featured the England World Cup team, who has just returned from touring Canada whereas Spurs, who had just secured the league/cup double played a Football Association XI in 1961. Ten years later, it was played between Leicester City and Liverpool, neither of whom were victorious in the league and cup.

The game hasn’t always been played at the beginning of the season, although this rule has been in place since 1959.

Prior to 1993, if the game ended all-square the trophy was shared, and each was allowed to hold the silverware for six months, but common sense soon prevailed, and a penalty shoot-out was introduced. There is no extra time in a Community Shield, the match will go straight to spotkicks if the scores are level after 90 minutes.

As the game isn’t officially deemed to be a competitive fixture, each team is allowed to use seven subs during the course of the game. Managers will often rotate their squads for this fixture, as they try to improve the fitness of their players.

Manchester United are the most successful side in the Community Shield having been victorious on 17 occasions, as well as drawing the game four times. Arsenal and Liverpool are also into double figures when it comes to successes in this one-off game. United’s 8-4 victory over Swindon in 1911 remains the highest-scoring game in the history of the competition.

Brighton and Hove Albion hold the record for being the only side to prevail in the Community Shield, despite never having secured the league title or won the FA Cup.

Where and When?

The Community Shield takes place seven days before the official start of the new Premier League season. It is held at Wembley Stadium, and typically kicks off at 3pm.

Why is it So Popular?

The Community Shield is a very popular event, although there is often more interest across Europe than there is in the UK. After a barren couple of months, it tends to get football fans excited about the imminent return of the Premier League season.

It is also an opportunity for fans of the two teams involved to see how their squads are shaping up ahead of the forthcoming campaign.

New signings will often get a run out in this contest, and it is often viewed as a chance to make an impression.

What Betting Opportunities are Available?

There are many betting opportunities available on the Community Shield. It is essentially priced up as a standard Premier League match so all of the usual markets are available. Bookmakers will also run a number of specials relating to this one-off game, and new signings can often be subject of boosts or enhancements from many companies.

Key Betting Markets

To Win in 90 Minutes – This is the simplest market for punters to get stuck into. It is a case of predicting which of the two sides will be victorious inside 90 minutes. Also known as 1X2, there are three possible outcomes in this market. The prices can often be a bit uncertain pre-kick off, and can be shaped by team news, which typically arrives an hour before the game.

To Lift the Trophy – This is essentially a case of predicting which of the two participants will collect the silverware at the end of the game. This will incorporate the penalty shoot-out. Prices will be shorter in this market as there are only two possible outcomes.

Goals – Over/Under 2.5 – Because this game is a bit of an unknown, many punters tend to opt for a goals-based bet. This takes the match result out of the equation. The line tends to be set at Under/Over 2.5 Goals, although punters will be able to opt for different lines such as Under/Over 3.5 Goals or a far more cautious Under 1.5/Over 1.5 Goals. The match must contain three or more goals in order for this bet to land.

First Goalscorer/Anytime Goalscorer – This is a great way of having a bet on this match without backing either side to win. It’s always advised to check team line-ups before utilising this market, although the majority of big names are likely to start. The latter requires your chosen player to find the net at any point during the 90 minutes whereas the first goalscorer market offers bigger prices, but they must net the opening goal in order to receive a pay-out.

Highest Scoring Half – This is a market which requires punters to predict which half will be the busiest. Second half odds are often shorter as players begin to tire, especially at this early stage of the season.

Handicaps – Handicaps are a great way of betting if the match outright odds are a little on the short side. In these markets, it is possible to give the underdogs a head start (+1 for example) or give the favourites a handicap to overcome (-1). Your chosen team must still be winning with this handicap applied to their total goals – for example Team A 3-1 Team B. If you take (-1) of Team A’s score, they would still have won the match (2-1)

Both Teams to Score – This market will require both of the sides to get onto the scoresheet. Winning scores could include 1-1, 2-1, 2-2 or 3-2. This is a 50/50, and prices are often fairly short on this market.

Correct Score – This is a market which appeals to more ambitious punters, and is a chance to correct the predict the final score of the Community Shield. Big rewards are available to punters who can correct forecast the result of this game. Results such as 1-1 and 2-1 either way are usually the shortest prices in this market.

Bobby’s Big Betting Tips for the Community Shield

Team News is Pivotal – The team news will typically arrive an hour before KO, and it’s always advised not to rush into your bets until the full XIs have been confirmed. Managers can often put out more experimental sides for this fixture, and that can seriously affect the betting. Also, some players aren’t quite fit enough and may not start this game. Anyone who is betting on the anytime goalscorer markets should be particularly wary of wagering before the line-ups have been confirmed. It’s also worth remembering that with seven subs eligible in this game, it could still be worth backing a player who starts on the bench. There is a good chance they will play some part in this fixture.

Assess the Managers Mindsets – The majority of managers will take this game seriously with Pep Guardiola calling the 2018 fixture “the first of our finals”, however there is a boss who occasionally describes it as a “glorified friendly”. I always read through the pre-match press conferences, and if it doesn’t feel like they’re taking it seriously, I will steer clear. If you can find a boss who will be putting out his strongest XI, and is determined to add more silverware to the cabinet, their team becomes inherently more backable.

Be Extra Cautious During Major Tournament Years – Some managers will give their players an extra week off if they’ve recently featured in an International tournament. Always take a look at the calendar, and asses whether this could potentially affect the outcome of the contest. Eden Hazard was given 2018 off after competing for Belgium in the World Cup Semi-Finals, and this didn’t help Chelsea’s cause.

Don’t expect a Fast Start – Just because two sides are typically high-scoring doesn’t mean that the game will be an entertaining one. It is played at the beginning of the campaign, and fitness can be an issue. It is also played in sweltering conditions, so the first half can often be slow.

BT Sport will have coverage of the 2019 Community Shield, and there will be plenty of coverage on the BBC Website as well.

Australia Will Be Wary of Pakistan Threat

pakistan.vs .australia

Pakistan have a reputation for being unpredictable on the cricket field and so it has proven once again in this World Cup, as after three games, Sarfaraz Ahmed’s team have a record of one win, one defeat and one no-result, which leaves them right in the middle of the pack.

There was little that they could do about the washed-out third game against Sri Lanka at Bristol, but their opening two games showcased the worst and the best of Pakistan cricket. Taking on the West Indies in the tournament’s second game, they collapsed in the face of some hostile short-pitched bowling from Oshane Thomas and Andre Russell, registering 105 runs in failing to reach the half-way stage; a total that the West Indies knocked off in under 14 overs.

With expectations suitably lowered, Pakistan came out in their next game against England as big underdogs, which is often the way they like it. Strengthening their batting line-up with the addition of Asif Ali and Shoaib Malik, they set a challenging total of 348, then managed to contain the world’s most explosive batting line-up, eventually winning by 14 runs.

Predicting which Pakistan will turn up to Wednesday’s game against Australia at Taunton is therefore a tricky business, and Australia will certainly be on their guard, despite having won two of their three games so far, leaving them sharing fourth spot in the table at the end of the weekend.

The Aussies didn’t have to work too hard in their opener, beating Afghanistan by seven wickets, and they had to dig deep to see off a determined West Indies side in their second outing, which they did thanks to a contribution of 92 by Nathan Coulter-Nile and a five-wicket haul from Mitchell Starc. Those results, combined with their strong form coming into the tournament, which included a 3-2 series win in India help to explain why they are clear favourites to win this game. BetCris rate the Australians as the -275 favourites, with Pakistan odds-against at +211.

But there will be concerns in the Australian camp about the way they folded in their third game at the weekend, when they conceded 352 to India and were bowled out 36 runs short with the final ball of the contest. Totals of 288 and 316 in their two games against Test-class opponents suggest that, despite the return of Steve Smith and David Warner to the line-up after their ball-tampering ban, the Australians are still lagging behind the likes of England and India when it comes to recording the mammoth totals that have become common in the modern fifty-over game.

They will also expect more from their back-up bowlers; Glenn Maxwell, Adam Zampa and Marcus Stoinis, who have so far failed to exercise the control that the coaching staff would like to support the front-line quicks. Australia may be favourites going into this game, but they have their share of weaknesses and it would be no surprise to see Pakistan push them hard.

BOBBY’S BEST WEEKEND BETTING EVENTS – 15th-16th JUNE

DGqUIAA cqM

Aussie Rules – AFL – Freemantle vs Port Adelaide Power

The first of my big betting events comes from the AFL as we creep ever closer to the end-of-season play-offs. These two sides have top eight ambitions, with Freemantle on a terrific run of form. The Dockers had a bye last weekend, which came off the back of consecutive wins, and they will be full of confidence entering this tie.

That double helped them bounce back from a disappointing run of three consecutive defeats, and they remain on the fringes of the top eight. Their home form at the Optus Stadium has been very strong with a 5-1 record in front of their own fans, and only four teams can boast better home form so far this season.

Port Adelaide Power have not been quite as consistent, and are struggling to secure back-to-back victories. Their recent record of W-L-W-L-L means that they are very tough to predict, and they hold a 3-3 record in away games so far. Their victory at the MCG against West Coast encapsulated their season. It was a game that they weren’t supposed to win, but they somehow put in their best performance of the campaign.

A victory here would give them some breathing space in the top eight, and would provide a huge step forward for their play-off ambitions. Travis Boak, a perennial ball-winner will have a huge say in this game, and he will be looking to influence this match, and help the Power put some more points on the board. Since switching back to midfield, he’s climbed up official AFL Player Rankings, and he could be the man to keep an eye on here.

The home side usually wins this tie whenever these two teams meet, and it’s hard to look beyond Fremantle’s home form. Bradley Hill could be crucial in this game, and he’s already collected a season-high 35 disposals.

Port Adelaide Power haven’t won here since 2014, and they will be determined to end that run this weekend. However, the home side are in excellent form and should be able to take another step towards a top eight position.

BT Sport have coverage of all AFL games this season, and UK viewers can enjoy highlights of all of this weekend’s fixtures.

Soccer – Copa America – Argentina vs Colombia

The Copa America gets underway this week, and this is one of the highlights of the opening set of fixtures. Argentina vs Colombia is the second of our big betting events, and I can’t wait to stay up and watch this high-profile clash.

Argentina were desperately disappointing at the 2018 World Cup, and they’ll be keen to show that they aren’t a fading force when they take to the field on Saturday. They warmed up with a fairly routine victory over Nicaragua, with Lionel Messi and the impressive Lautaro Martinez both notching a double.

Jorge Sampaoli’s reign was a disappointing one, and the new era has certainly left fans feeling more positive. The players look a little more interested, and it remains to be seen how they fare when faced with tougher opposition. Lionel Scaloni has been put in charge until the end of this tournament, and this is his chance to give the football authorities a big decision to make.

They have managed to reach the final in four of the last five stagings of this tournament, and they have a very successful record at the Copa America. They haven’t been successful at this tournament since 1993 and this is a tough start to their campaign.

With Paraguay and Qatar to come, Argentina will almost certainly qualify for the next stage of the competition if they can get something from this fixture.

There’s been a change at the top for Colombia, with Carlos Queiroz tasked with guiding them to victory in Group B. They finished third at the last tournament, and will be keen to build upon their relatively positive World Cup 2018 showing.

Like their opponents, they will know that a victory in this opening tie should help them cement their place in the next round of the competition. Queiroz hasn’t had too much time to assemble his squad, but he has plenty of talent at his disposal, and I can’t wait to see his starting XI here.

This game is one of the highlights of the opening Copa America fixtures, and It should be a fascinating match-up between these two sides.

Premier Sports will be showing every single game from the 2019 Copa America this summer in the UK.

Soccer – Copa America – Brazil vs Bolivia

Hosts Brazil get their Copa America campaign underway in Group A as they take on Bolivia on Saturday. The Selecao prepared for this fixture in ideal fashion by dismantling Honduras 7-0, although they did lost Arthur to injury in the process. Their opening game should be a thrilling 90 minutes, and it’s the third of my big betting events.

Neymar’s absence is a bit of a blow for Tite and his men, but they have plenty of depth to their squad, and the boss wasn’t short on options. Their World Cup 2018 campaign was a little disappointing, and they looked devoid of ideas of Belgium, but they can be a force in this competition. They have a good record in this competition, and with it being played on home soil, they will be roared on by passionate locals.

They have a slightly tougher group than Argentina with Peru, Venezuela and Bolivia, and each of their opponents will provide stiff opposition here.

36-year old Dani Alves is included in the squad once again, whilst Phillipe Coutinho will be hoping to overcome a below-par domestic campaign when he takes to the field in this opening clash.

It’s a nice easy start to the tournament for Brazil with Bolivia having won just one competitive match since October 2017. That sole success came against Myanmar, and they have scored just twice in their last six matches. Bolivia are likely to be defending for the majority of this tie, and it remains to be seen how long it takes from Brazil to unlock their defence.

This game will be live on Premier Sports 1 on Saturday evening, and UK viewers can enjoy all of the Copa America clashes on this channel.

Boxing – Featherweight – Josh Warrington vs Kid Galahad

There’s another fascinating bout taking place on Saturday night as Josh Warrington takes on underdog Kid Galahad, and it’s the fourth of my big betting events for this weekend.

This Yorkshire match-up should be absolutely fascinating with the Leeds fighter taking on his Sheffield rival as his bids to defend his IBF Featherweight crown.

Warrington is a man on the up, and he is likely to have the majority of West Yorkshire rooting for him at the First Direct Arena, although he must be careful not to underestimate his opponent.

His fight against Carl Frampton was one of the best displays I’ve witness in many years, and if he can keep up those energy levels, he should be able to protect his crown with relative ease.

Galahad has gone under the radar in recent years, and he is on the comeback trail after his drugs ban of 2014. He’s been working hard since returning to the ring, and he’s been almost foot-perfect in recent years. The 29-year old has risen up the IBF rankings, and will have plenty of supporters travelling the short journey to cheer him on.

Although he is the underdog in the betting, there is still plenty of pressure on Galahad to succeed, and he could make a big statement with a victory here.

This fight is live on BT Sport on Saturday night, and viewers can also enjoy a tremendous undercard.

Best Bets of the Day – Sunday, June 9th 2019

England Women

India v Australia
Cricket World Cup – 10.30 am
Sky Sports

This is one of the big, heavyweight clashes of the Cricket World Cup. Both India and Australia are expected to be in the final four of the tournament. There should be some fireworks in this one. India started the World Cup a little later than the rest of the nations involved. That was because of the end of their domestic IPL season. India opened their World Cup campaign with a six-wicket win over South Africa. They have their star power lead by captain Virat Kohli and he will take plenty of backing as one of the best bets of the day to be India’s top batsman.

Australia have come to play though. They are the reigning World Cup holders and are right in top form again now after some struggles. They claimed an easy 7-wicket victory over Afghanistan in their World Cup opener without breaking a sweat. Then they did a fantastic job of defending a 288 total against West Indies. However, in that match, the Windies had them on the ropes but could not finish them off. Australia edged home by 15 runs.

This game could be something special. Australian bowlers Mitchell Stark and Pat Cummins look in top shape at the moment. Steve Smith and David Warner have already made positive contributions with the bat. But then you have India who just look stronger as an all-around team. The top bookmakers have India at 4/5 against Australia’s even money quote. It is expected to be that close.

England v Scotland
Women’s World Cup 2019 – 5.00 pm
BBC

England’s Lioness make their first strides into the 2019 Women’s World Cup. It is going to be against their neighbours from north of the border, Scotland. This should be a great derby fixture and really what it does is heap a little extra pressure on England. England are the 1/5 favourites with top bookmakers in the match outright. But the occasion makes this game a little tricky for them. It is against a team who are going to be fired up to take them on.

England have actually won only three of their last six games played and don’t look anywhere near as dynamic as they were when they took bronze four years ago in Canada. The expectancy is fully on them to pick up the win, but in their warm-up matches, they suffered some poor defeats in international friendly games against New Zealand and Canada. Will it all come together on the day for them?

Scotland are in a positive frame of mind at the moment and won’t mind starting as 14/1 underdogs with top bookies. They know they are underdogs and have nothing to lose because of that. But they have won four of their last five games, going unbeaten in that sequence of form. At Euro 2017 Scotland were humiliated in a crushing 6-0 defeat against England in the group stage. They are much better equipped this time around, crucially with no injury problems to their star players. They could make it a closer contest against the Lionesses.

Australia v Italy
Women’s World Cup 2019 – 12 noon
BBC

This looks as if it is going to be an enjoyable meeting between Australia and Italy at the Women’s World Cup. There’s no question that the Matildas from Australia are the favourites and the bookmakers have them at 8/13 to win this game. They are regarded as something of a dark horse for this tournament.  Australia will be looking to better a sequence of three straight quarter-final exits at the Women’s World Cup. They have superstar power in their young forward Sam Kerr who is a genuine Golden Boot contender. If Australia find a supply line to her, then she will score.

But this is an interesting fixture because Italy are on the rise. They are undefeated in the 2019 calendar year and have been consistently putting up good results. The Italians aren’t quite at the level of being among the top tier teams in the world, but they are starting to knock on the door. They are developing something very good and even though they are 4/1 underdogs in this one, there is a decent chance that they could throw down a challenge. It will be fascinating to see what both of these bring to the table in this World Cup opener.

The Women’s World Cup is taking centre stage on Sunday and you can keep up with live bets from that and other sporting events.

Best Bets of the Day – Saturday, June 8th 2019

England cricket

Germany v China
Women’s World Cup 2019 – 2.00 pm
BBC

Germany are a leading contender to win the Women’s World Cup. They will kick off on Saturday at the tournament as strong odds-on favourites to bank a win over China. Germany will be looking to improve on their fourth-place finish from four years ago in Canada. They do have the star power to pull it off. Midfielder Dzsenifer Marozsan is regarded as one of the best in the world, and they have the scoring threat of Alexandra Popp.

The leading bookies have Popp as the 3/1 First Goalscorer favourite as there should be chances coming the way of the Germans in this one. Germany are in form, not having suffered defeat in their last twelve games, winning ten of those. China have lost each of their last four games, but have scored in all but one of their last seven. They are huge 9/1 underdogs for a win over Germany though.

England v Bangladesh
Cricket World Cup 2019 – 10.30 am
Sky Sports

Tournament favourites England will be looking for a big response as they face Bangladesh in the World Cup on Saturday. After opening in positive style with a win over South Africa, they fell short in a big run chase against the unpredictable Pakistan. So that was a defeat which would have brought them back down to earth a little bit. So they will be feeling just a little bit of pressure now to perform against one of the weaker teams in the tournament.

England won’t change much but their bowling and fielding against Pakistan was the poorest that is has been in a long time. But with the bat they have huge scoring power and Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow are joint 3/1 favourites with leading bookmakers to top score for the English. They will both have their backers at that price among best bets of the day. The traders aren’t giving Bangladesh much of a chance at 5/1. They opened with a shock win over South Africa though, before narrowly losing by two wickets against New Zealand. Will they give England a game?

Croatia v Wales
Euro 2020 Qualifiers – 2.00 pm
Sky Sports

Four of the five teams in Group E of Euro 2020 qualification are sat on three points heading into the next round of matches. Wales and Croatia are two of them. The Welsh have played just one game so far, banking a tight 1-0 home win over Slovakia. So there will be more pressure on Croatia in this one, as this will be their third game of the qualification campaign. With home advantage, the top bookies have Croatia at 8/13 odds-on favourites to win the fixture.

Wales had lost four of six games heading into their Euro 2020 qualification opener against Slovakia. They are a side which generally struggles for goals and in none of their last seven games have they managed more than one goal in a fixture. This is arguably their toughest away game in the group, reflected in their 5/1 underdog odds. The Croatians are on a three-match winning streak at home, scoring at least two goals in each of those.

Estonia v Northern Ireland
Euro 2020 Qualifiers – 5.00 pm
Sky Sports

Estonia are one of the outsiders for qualification from Group C of Euro 2020 qualification. Their one game so far saw them lose 2-0 in Northern Ireland. So this is a quick turnaround in having to face the Irish again. Estonia had a dreadful Nations League campaign, but have picked up a bit in form. Estonia are W2 D1 L1 in their last four games. The one defeat in that sequence was the one against the Irish though.

Estonia have scored just one goal in their last three games. Northern Ireland have opened strongly in the group, beating Estonia and Belarus. Both of those wins were on home soil. That was a big upturn in form as the Irish had lost four of their six games prior to the start of these qualifiers. Northern Ireland have failed to score in any of their last seven away games. The leading bookmakers have them at even money to squeeze out a win in Estonia.

Scotland v Cyprus
Euro 2020 Qualifiers – 7.45 pm
Sky Sports

Steve Clarke is the new Scotland manager and will be stepping straight into Euro 2020 qualification. This is the type of game that the Scots can’t afford to be losing on home soil. They are W1 L1 in the group so far from their two games, the loss happening in their first game which was a 3-0 hammering in Kazakhstan.

They followed that up with a low-key 2-0 win over minnows San Marino. Cyprus thumped San Marino 5-0 after losing 2-0 against Belgium in their opening games of the group. Cyprus have won just two of their last eight fixtures and are 6/1 underdogs for their trip to Hampden Park, going up against the 8/15 odds-on favouritism of the Scots.

Take a look at the best of the big bookmaker bonus offers that are around, which could potentially add a bit of value to your wagering.

Best Bets of the Day – Friday, June 7th 2019

Jo Konta

Johanna Konta v Marketa Vondrousova
French Open Tennis – 10.00 am
ITV

What a moment, what a tournament it has been from Britain’s Johanna Konta. After never before having won a match at Roland Garros at the French Open, she finds herself in the semi-finals. She has been in blistering hot form and this is the culmination of some great clay court form she has laid down this season. Konta has been to the finals of Morocco and Rome on the dirt this season already. She is now 8/11 with leading bookmakers to win this semi-final fixture in the Grand Slam.

Konta will get plenty of patriotic backing as one of the best bets of the day to win her match. This is her third Grand Slam semifinal but has lost the previous two. Konta will be facing up to Czech player Marketa Vondrousova who has been in great form this season. The 19-year-old has been to two finals during the 2019 WTA Tour. Vondrousova beat world number one Simona Halep in Rome recently, before falling to Konta in the quarter finals. She is the underdog in what is her first ever Grand Slam final four match, but she is not going to be a pushover.

Pakistan v Sri Lanka
Cricket World Cup 2019 – 10.30 am
Sky Sports

You just never know what you are going to get out of Pakistan at a tournament. They had a horror show in their opening fixture of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, losing to West Indies by seven wickets. It was a shambles of a batting performance, Pakistan getting skittled out for 105 runs only. That was their 11th straight ODI defeat. But then as bad as they were against the Windies, they were equally as brilliant in their second match against England.

England had thrashed Pakistan 4-0 in a ODI series ahead of the World Cup, so were big underdogs for that match. But they held on, defending a very good 348 score against the tournament favourites. So what’s next for them? They are 1/3 odds-on to get a win against Sri Lanka on Friday. Sri Lanka opened with a pretty heavy defeat against New Zealand and then took victory over Afghanistan in a weather-shortened game. They have looked pretty fragile with the bat though and Sri Lanka are big 12/5 underdogs with top bookmakers for this.

Denmark v Ireland
Euro 2020 Qualifiers – 7.45 pm
Sky Sports

This is a big Euro 2020 qualifiers for both of these. For Denmark it will be just their second game, having opened with a good, but dramatically earned point away at Switzerland. Denmark were trailing 3-0 with five minutes left to play but somehow managed to rescue a point, their third goal coming in the 93 minute of the game. Denmark have remained undefeated in their last seven games, drawing each of their last three. On home soil, the bookmakers have them at 4/7 to win this qualifier.

Denmark and Ireland met in the UEFA Nations League group stage at the back end of last year, playing out 0-0 draws in their two meetings. Denmark have scored at least two goals in four of their last five games. The Irish have made a perfect start to qualification, winning their first two games. They were 1-0 successes only against Gibraltar and Georgia though. Ireland had been on a six-match winless streak of form before that. They have scored just two goals in their last six games, and the top bookies have them as 7/1 underdogs against much tougher opponents.

France Women v South Korean Women
Women’s World Cup 2019 – 8.00 pm
BBC

This is the opening fixture of the Women’s World Cup 2019. It is going to be a special night in Paris then for the French side in front of their home support. There’s the opening ceremony to go through, so there should be a party atmosphere. The French are one of the leading sides in the world and start the tournament as the joint-favourites alongside the USA. They have massive star power and are huge odds-on favourites to win this match. So much so, leading bookies have them at 1/2 to win to nil.

South Korea are going to have a difficult night here. It’s a daunting game for them to walk into. South Korea only made it through to the World Cup via a playoff tie, and they are not the strongest side in attendance from the AFC. They are out of form as well,  preparations not having going well for them. South Korea have lost each of their last four games now and this would be a massive World Cup shock if they found a way to avoid defeat in this fixture.

It is the start of another fantastic weekend of sporting action, read Bobby’s Big Weekend Bets for more insights into the weekend.

Johnson Favourite in Canada

dustin johnson canada

We’re a little over a week away from the season’s third Major, but judging by the field for this year’s Canadian Open, there are plenty of top-named players who want to hone their game ahead of the US Open, in what promises to be a competitive and absorbing tournament.

This year the competition is taking place at Hamilton Golf and Country Club, instead of Glen Abbey. Hamilton is a relatively short course, by the standards of the PGA, so this isn’t a layout that will particularly benefit the big hitters, while the narrow fairways and severe rough suggest that success in this year’s tournament will be based on accuracy and precise shot-making.

That said, the current favourite is one of the biggest hitters in the game. Dustin Johnson heads to Canada as the defending champion, and if he brings his A-game he will take some stopping. BetCris have him as the 525 favourite, no doubt partially due to his record of twice winning a tournament before the US Open, including the St Jude Classic last year.

Also involved in what is a strong field this year is double US PGA Champion Brooks Koepka, who got the better of Johnson at Bethpage, and who should be fresh for this challenge. He is joined at the top of the list of favourites by Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy. McIlroy has been struggling for form since March but can never be written off, while Thomas has yet to return to his best golf after a wrist injury, but clearly has the class to win this competition.

But there will be plenty of strength in depth at Hamilton, including the double Masters winner Bubba Watson. Another big hitter, Watson has been in solid form this season. Although he missed the cut at the PGA, the course at Hamilton may suit him better as he has the shot-making capacity to excel there, as he did back in 2006, when he finished fourteenth thanks to a first-round 65. The poa annua putting greens should also be to his liking, and if his putting holds up, he could be a lively contender.

The short nature of the course may also suit those who excel when the premium is on accuracy, which could bring the likes of Jim Furyk, Brandt Snedeker and Webb Simpson into contention. Hamilton has some similarities to the course at Sedgefield and River Highlands, and all three have shown form at those venues, while Snedeker in particular will be suited by the greens at an event that he will have fond memories of, having won it in 2013.

And one more potential contender to note is Scott Piercey. He won this event when it was last held at Hamilton in 2012, ahead of Robert Garrigus and William McGirt, and that has to put him in the shake-up even if the layout doesn’t appear at first glance to suit his driver-dominated playing style.
